Yeah, I've already removed my account as a result.

Glad I moved away from it a while ago, AniList!

What makes it superior to MAL?

[–] tatsuob@ani.social 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As far as I know, AniList has better search functionalities and allows korean and chinese manga/animation. While MAL may have larger database of animes. Also they're owned by a Web3 company now 🫥 at least it's not an ad company nor US company because they go wild putting data tracking and collection bloating everything all in the name of Data Brokers profits 👻

Hate to break it to you, but it's not just those companies. Kodansha's manga app, KManga, has over 2x the trackers that Facebook has. Them mf'ers are greedy

There was a couple of reasons that I switched a few years back but it really boils down to

-So much more customization for scoring. You can do 1-10 (down to the decimal), 1-5, stars or even smiley faces.

-Extremely clean interface that is way less cluttered then MAL

-Better mobile app support in AL-Chan

-More QOL that caters to the seasonal watcher

-More details about a show

Overall I think it does 99% of what MAL does but does it better. My only gripes with anilist at this point is that they don't show the OPs and EDs like MAL does.

You can easily export your list from MAL to anilist so the barrier to entry is tiny.

Its not a US or Web3 company and works just as great for me

Same with me, just make it 6 years ago ( kept updating mal just in case anilist wen't down ).

God I'm old

[–] nyan@lemmy.cafe 3 points 2 days ago

Nah, those of us who are actually old keep our lists on paper, not on this newfangled Internet thing. 😉

Goodbye and thanks for all the fish, MAL.

Oh... This can't be good news can it?

I mean I am used to seeing bad news everyday, and this is what a bad one looks like.

[–] sag@ani.social 8 points 3 days ago

Never used MAL. AniList is best for me

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

Okay, so, either MAL or AniList are the only one of these with a recommendation engine built into it, and I'd it's MAL, I'm gonna be upset.

Anyone have an easy migration tool they recommend if we want to move/backup our lists to somewhere else?

Is AniList the best similar tracker?

EDIT: All set up on AniList now. Thank you for the help.

[–] tatsuob@ani.social 7 points 3 days ago

I don't own it but I found this one

  • Go to (https://malscraper.azurewebsites/) and export the lists (anime/manga) you want by entering the source platform and your username on that platform, and download the file.

  • Go to this Anilist import settings page (https://anilist.co/settings/import) to import the lists (you must be logged in with the account) and upload to the correct section the correct list you downloaded earlier

Or if you follow strict FOSS principles and rather use open-source alternatives, there's this project on GitHub https://github.com/metacritical/anhilist---

Anilist has option to import MAL lists, so it shodn't be a problem. I personaly moved from MAL to Anilist awile ago and used this option

[–] muhyb@programming.dev 3 points 3 days ago

Anilist has an import option. Kitsu has an import option. AniDB might not have. My favourite is Kitsu though.

I’m too paranoid to publicalize what I watch or not. But I use my calendar app to keep track of what I want to watch. Just added 3 AI dystopic films.
