Thanks to Wiimmfi, Modded Wii's and any DS can still play online. even using Dolphin or MelonDS.

It's also worth mentioning you can get most (if not all?) event pokemon through wiimmfi! It's also a lot more reliable than I first assumed, I still regularly play Animal Crossing Wild World with a friend through it and never had a single connection issue

I hated event Pokémon with a passion growing up. I bought my game boy on the US, but I would live half of the year in a country neglected by Nintendo, once back on the states for the working season (my parents) you could only get them by traveling somewhere stupid like New York (I lived in the other coast). Even when they started using mall wifi on game stores as events I still always associated it with a life I would never have and didn’t even bother as I could never legitimately complete a Pokédex so why try to start now. I can see how that would work in Japan perhaps, but maybe the country kids felt left out as well.

Oof I feel you there, I never got any event distribution that was tied to a real life location because they just never did them in the countries I lived in. ;; The wi-fi ones imo mitigated this a bit since you could get them anywhere so long as you had a wi-fi connection, but it is a bummer so many things in these games are now forever locked away due to time

I’ll have to look into seeing if this can get some of the DQ9 stuff. Thanks for making my brain work.

But what about things like the Pokémon GTS or Wonder Trade? I know you can make fake GTS servers to get event ‘mons, but it was really fun to complete the Pokédex legitimately putting up starters for trade.

What I really want to know is if there is any way to unlock all the event-only courses for my old Pokewalker.

Wiimmfi distributes those events periodically. You just need to get them in HG/SS and then you can select them.

Interesting, I need to look into that.

I assume I have to have somebody to play with? There's no random matchmaking like in Mario kart?

[–] missingno@fedia.io 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Standard matchmaking does work on Wiimmfi, but you may not be able to count on actually finding anyone in the queue.

Mario Kart DS is a gamble unless its at peak hours, but Mario kart Wii nearly always has a couple hundred people online

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Wait it connects to Nintendo servers?

[–] missingno@fedia.io 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It connects to Wiimmfi servers.

At least for mariokart Wii I believe the servers are hosted by wiimmfi because Nintendo turned off their official servers many moons ago

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Hrm I think I'm looking into this tomorrow

[–] randomname@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii both have random matchmaking, but for Mario Kart DS the only reliable way to find a lobby is to ping the Mario Kart DS discord server, although at peak hours there may be between 3 and 7 people playing Mario Kart DS even without pinging the chat. I actually played a match yesterday like that.

I just found my 3DS XL a few days ago. Are there custom softwares to install on it?

[–] randomname@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

yep, and it only takes about 15 minutes to mod one. all you do is follow a quick tutorial on the 3ds.hacks.guide site

Thank you so much!
