It's cute and surprisingly well built, but at that size it is more of a novelty. If you stick to simple games and you've got smaller fingers it's maybe viable for "5 minutes at the bus stop" type situations.

If anyone is looking at this and wishing there was something even smaller, have a look at the Thumby, the true handheld for ants.

What in the goddamn...?

That Thumby thing seems interesting but holy hell... How am I supposed to play that? I Guess it's a great birthday present for a pet ant indeed.

I was a Kickstarter backer for the Thumby, I have fairly small hands and even I struggle to play it!

It’s a very fun keyring though, and an interesting novelty for a lifelong Game Boy fan.

I was given the Thumby as a surprise gift recently and I LOVE it! Yes, for 99% of people it's a silly novelty, but as someone who loves the Game Boy and making hobby games it's perfect for me!

I did a short review here. :)

EDIT: To clarify, the Thumby doesn't play Game Boy games, I just love small retro style portable consoles.

On the Thumby, it certainly says something when all the quotes on the link are amazement at its size rather than whether they actually can play anything on it

[-] Mishmash@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

Haven’t tried it, but I think it’s definitely a novelty. It’s way smaller than my Miyoo Mini and my hands get cramped trying to play games on it for 15+ minute sessions.

Speaking as an owner of the FunKey S (same internals, different form factor): yes, a big part is novelty. Pulling out a keychain-sized device that can play Metal Gear Solid is a hell of a party trick.

But that said, if you primarily play games on it that are designed for portables (Game Boy, Game Gear, Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket Color, etc.) and have halfway decent eyesight, it’s actually quite enjoyable. Games designed for a TV often have uncomfortable cropping or tiny text that gets eaten up by the ~256x256 resolution of the display. But pulling it out to play a little Shantae while waiting in a line is a delight.

Omg your eyes! Headache in 30 min.

[-] ForgetReddit@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

What’s the name of the clamshell version of this? That’s what I’d get.

[-] MonochromeObserver@kbin.social 2 points 11 months ago

@ForgetReddit Not from the same company, but FunKey S. You can build your own if you have the means since it's open source and open hardware.

[-] ForgetReddit@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Yes! I’d want a clamshell and put it on my keychain. Exposed buttons = problems.

[-] EvilBit@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I love my FunKey S because it literally fits perfectly into the watch pocket of my jeans and is adorable. The nano probably gets longer battery life though. FKS only gets around 2-3 hours, I think.

[-] GustavoM@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

That'd make my eyes bleed almost instantly, so nah. Maybe for a "casual flex" between friends and thats it.

[-] thingsiplay@kbin.social 1 points 11 months ago

@2tone Too small for what? If your goal is to play on the device, then don't waste your money. If your goal is to have a fun accessory just for the lolz, then this is a nice "object". I find the price a bit spicy, otherwise it would be fun to have it. Miniature buttons and controls and 1.5" display aren't just meant to be played. If you really want to play, there are better options.

Thinking of maybe picking up two for the kids, 6 and 4. Put some Pokemon or Mario on there and they'd be set.

[-] Mononon@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

I've let my 4 and 6 year old nephews play with some of my handhelds, and the Miyoo Mini seemed about the right size for them. The Nano may be too small even for kids that little.

[-] jecxjo@midwest.social 1 points 11 months ago

Good to know, they are pretty much Pokemon and Farming games so the biggest ergonomic question is how well it fits in their hand.
