Both!
We radiocarbon date things in "freedom years", which are normal years, but scaled to a Biblical young earth. (This is sarcasm... For now.)
Presumably in other countries they don't avoid dating Republicans or Democrats? (But only in the technical sense of them not existing or at least being called something different:-P)
Actually, realistically I wonder if Hollywood has exported the culture so much that only regional differences may be relevant, so this might be easier for others to ask how customs differ from America than the other way around (especially since as Americans we know nothing whatsoever of other cultures - we think only of ourselves don'tchaknow!? /s:--P)
