You know, for all the complaints about phones all being the same, I don't see anybody trying to get rid of the stupid punch hole anymore. I haven't taken a selfie since 2014, Sony is certainly looking like it doesn't have many more Xperias in its back pocket and I really, really would like a replacement that isn't afraid of having a thin forehead where you can put sensors without defacing the display. I would take something with expandable storage and a headphone jack for the complete package, but let's start with a usable screen without holes in it. It's gotten to the point where I haven't seen a single phone in years I didn't look at and immediately go "nope, not for me".
Samsung Galaxy S9 was exactly like that. I can't understand why there are no phones just like S9. Still a modern looking phone, all these years later
I agree. My previous phone was a OnePlus 7 Pro, the last one with a pop-up camera. I only ever used that camera as a party trick, didn't take a single real photo with it. The only reason I switched to Motorola edge 50 is because the OnePlus hadn't gotten security updates in 2 years and it's second battery was also starting to degrade. I'd use an aftermarket ROM but my banking app probably won't like that. The Motorola is fine I guess. The punch hole doesn't often get in the way. But it'll never be quite as cool as the 7 pro..
Man, that was a time, with all the weird pop up cameras. They all mostly sucked and kept phones from actually useful features like water resistance, but it sure was fun.
I'll even take an under-display camera, although you can almost always see it and it's still unnecessary, when the actual camera lens can be crammed into a couple of mms of space at the top and that also gets you better speakers and room for additional sensors. The insanity is that now all that nonsensical innovation is in foldables instead, where you have a second full screen you can use to take much better selfies with the main camera package... and they're still putting punch holes in the large screens for some reason. Samsung went to all the trouble of going under-screen in one of those. It's insane.
I'm holding on to my older Xperia 1 and will consider upgrading if they do release the 1 VII this year, if only because I'll be shocked if it isn't the very last one. I have major gripes with some parts of their software, but at least the phone itself makes sense and, as you say, maybe if I sit on it long enough someone will make a compatible replacement ROM after I've migrated all my Google hostage apps and see what happens.
The only companies I've seen trying to do under display cameras were ZTE and Nubia (ex-subsidiary of ZTE) with their new Z70 and Red Magic 10.
Reviews say they produce good images but they're not quite there yet, guess the mainstream brands are unwilling to take any hit to selfie quality...

I loved the design on the Samsung S8 with the edge displays. Especially when the screen was dark and it was laying on the desk, it looked like a thing from the future. Without a cover it looked awesome and I often had friends with iphones comment they loved how it looked. In actual use it was a nightmare, the edge screen was often prone to ghost inputs. A glass screen protector was very visible, even the special ones that included a bit of a curve on the end. This ruined the design. And the back of the phone was glass as well, which made it look really good, but was actually a design flaw. To save on weight and costs it was an ultra thin glass and broke all the damn time. And not like the laminated screens where a crack is bad, but still usable, it was just straight glass so it would be very sharp and spew tiny glass fragments all over the place. Because the whole thing was glass with only a thin small aluminium frame, the thing flexed quite a bit and every time it flexed the back would crack. So you needed to really be very careful with the phone. Or put a cover around it, which made the whole design completely pointless.
After a while Samsung put a software update on the phone which the cpu and memory could simply not handle. It ruined the battery life, the thing got hot all the time and the UI stuttered like crazy. Since I had also replaced the back a couple of times and the front had a crack in it, I didn't went the custom ROM way but instead like an idiot upgraded to the S10 (which is exactly what Samsung wanted). I always thought the S8 was the best looking phone I ever had.

Same. The current Galaxy's look nice but they never managed to capture that futuristic feel of the S8/S9

Same! I'm surprised it's still running ok after 8 years. No point in replacing it yet, only reason I want to is for a better camera and battery life.
I had a different phone with the stupid curved edge screen and it also became a spiderweb of cracks after a small impact. I really hoped that manufacturers had realised that they were a terrible gimmick, but here we are again!
