Digs at Canada 'don't necessarily represent the views of the folks in our town,' says mayor of Haines, Alaska

Things have gotten a little weird lately with the U.S. and Canada, but one small-town mayor in Alaska hopes his town can still be Valentines with its neighbours across the border in the Yukon.

Mayor Tom Morphet of Haines, Alaska, penned a love letter of sorts this week and sent off a copy to his counterparts in nearby Haines Junction, Yukon and Whitehorse on Wednesday.

It says the Haines Borough wants to "reaffirm a relationship of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance" with those Yukon communities.

"We recognize that as northerners, we sometimes have as much in common with our Canadian neighbors [sic] as we do with our own countrymen in the southern latitudes."

That SIC is a savage act of aggression from CBC.

I wonder how most of Alaska voted, especially those in Haines. It's a nice platitude, but if it's what they voted for, it doesn't sound like enough of an apology. It's more of a "please don't be too mad at us" type of note. Elections matter. Feeling bad because the entire country is trying to buy Canadian and booing the American national anthem is one thing, but unless they act in a way that shows they are going to do something concrete about it, it's a useless gesture at this point.

The answer is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_United_States_presidential_election_in_Alaska#Results , and, while I can't isolate Haines, I note that overall, the GOP vote was up, and the Democrats down. I guess they didn't think it would come back to bite them then.

Thanks. I also found this https://www.elections.alaska.gov/results/24GENR/HD3.pdf which lists Haines 1 and Haines 2.

That is a screenshot of the Harris/Walz vote, 44% and 42%.

Trump/Vance was 49% and 50.5%.

So, yeah.

I wish the statements that Canadians were making were more directed at Trump instead of the US as a whole. This should be all of us working together. We know this is not what most of the people want, including those that voted Trump. It seems like an easy time to rally together

We can direct all we want and it won't do anything. Frankly, the voters in the USA made it clear they're not interested in working together with anyone. Trump supporters have been told for at least a decade how terrible he is, but they were more interested in listening to fox news. A whole group of absentee voters chose not to vote Harris over some vague ideas around Palestine, despite being told Trump would make it worse. Then there's everyone else who couldn't get off their ass to vote despite being told this was existential.

My heart does go out to the good people who did vote and are trying to change things. I'm on your side and I wish you well. But I'm sorry to say that there are a lot of people who deserve the shit that's coming. I'm tired of trying to "work together" through the first trump administration, through COVID, through the trucker convoy, through all the free speech bullshit, through all the reduction in women's rights and healthcare, through the reduction in trans rights, etc. Nazi punks fuck off!
