What happened in September 2024? Everyone just bailed for a month?

Too lazy to find the exact date, but at some point devs changed how they report user activity, and old instances were reporting incorrectly until they upgraded. The dip might align with that change?

Could make sense, particularly notable that the number of servers took a dive too.

We do not speak of it!

is anyone else surprised that mastodon and pixelfed have way more users than Lemmy? Lemmy feels wayyy more lively than any other fediverse stuff I've used

I think it’s just the nature of the platforms. On mastodon and Pixelfed you mostly come across users that you already follow, and the content isn’t geared towards replying. Whereas on Lemmy, you can get content from many users and that content is geared towards commenting

I just make the numbers up if someone asks me. "Yeah Im on Lemmy. How many users? Uh 2 trillion the last time I counted"
