A new survey conducted by Harvard and Harris has revealed that nearly one-quarter of American voters support Hamas over Israel in the war in Gaza.

The poll, conducted between January 15-16, 2025, sampled 2,650 registered voters and found that 21 per cent of respondents sided with the Palestinian group, which is designated as a terrorist organisation by the US State Department.

The survey revealed stark divisions in American public opinion, particularly across party lines. Among Democrats, 75 per cent expressed support for Israel, while 25 per cent were more inclined to back Hamas.

Republican voters displayed overwhelming support for Israel, with 81 per cent in favour, though 19 per cent still expressed some level of backing for Hamas.

I'd love to talk to one of the 19 percent of Republicans supporting Hamas πŸ‘€

I don’t like this partisan phrasing. There’s only a 6% difference between democrat and Republican support of Hamas.

Seriously, 6% is overwhelming now?

[–] inv3r5ion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah I wonder what the margin of error is.

A pathetically small number of Americans are against genocide. The entire country is a lost cause, I don't think it gets better from here.

The US, like Israel, is a settler-colonial state. And it’s the global imperial hegemon. And it was a slave state, in fact it still is.

Who they polling? Land lines at 2PM on a weekday? 100% of my friends support the struggle to eliminate apartheid in Israel and consequently Hamas..,

Hamas are genocidal terrorists. Unfortunately, so is Israel, and their actions have directly helped Hamas see it’s most successful recruitment drive in years.

Instead of pursuing a political solution to the events of October 7th, which would have garnered widespread sympathy for Israel and condemnation for Hamas, Israel just looked at the brutality of Hamas and went all, β€œhold my beer and watch this”.

And holy sh*t, did they ever deliver.

F**k Hamas. F**k Israel. I stand with the innocent and the powerless victims on BOTH sides.

Gosh, I wonder how that happened? /s

Was choosing "neither; both suck" an option? Because it doesn't seem like it, from the article, but I can't tell.

Why would we make this an Israel vs Hamas thing? It's very obviously an Israel vs Palestine thing. That'd be like if terrorists were bombing American schools and hospitals, and the news framed it as Terrorists vs Republicans. Nobody supports Hamas, we all support Palestine.

Because Hamas are freedom fighters and Israel are terrorists.

What else do you want to support, the PA?

In an ideal world, I support one of the opposition parties to Hamas.

But pragmatically, in reality, that's just not feasible. Palestine's main defensive power is Hamas. So while I agree it's an Zionist Regime vs. Palestine conflict, Hamas is to Palestine what the IOF is to the Zionist Regime - that is, their military power. It doesn't really mean much if someone "supports Israel in the conflict but doesn't support the IDF", that doesn't make sense outside of abstract ideas.

Nobody supports Hamas

I explicitly support Hamas. I also support the several hundred other orgs fighting Zionism, but I support Hamas too.

I support Hamas, and I know plenty of others who do.
