I feel like Y should be the successor to X.

[-] fujiwood@lemmy.world 29 points 11 months ago

Whyland doesn't sound as good though.

they do NOT get the joke!!!1!!

[-] AffineConnection@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The X window system is actually the successor to the W window system.

[-] red@feddit.de 7 points 11 months ago

There actually was a short-lived attempt to create a Y window system as a successor to X (before Wayland).

Funnily enough the website is still live, despite no progress in almost 20 years: y-windows.org

[-] overzeetop@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

millenial.com is just a whatsapp call away!

[-] elxeno@lemm.ee 49 points 11 months ago

Help! I'm getting screen tearing in the new twitter!

[-] marcos@lemmy.world 45 points 11 months ago

No, the successor for XCOM is UFO: Alien Invasion.

[-] pelya@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

The development had stopped since 2020, you'll have to make do with inferior closed-source commercial clone called XCOM 2.

[-] arkannon@iusearchlinux.fyi 38 points 11 months ago

Ahhh I can see the graphical glitches already

[-] mrquantumoff@lemm.ee 9 points 11 months ago

on X.com, I presume (that's where I get them)

[-] Vilian@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 months ago

i don't get them, the delay is enough to make them disappear, my desktop too, but the glithes are gone :b

[-] FellowHuman@lemmy.ml 27 points 11 months ago

Can someone please ELI5 this to me? Everyone seems to get it (as a joke?) but me.

[-] FellowHuman@lemmy.ml 24 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Ooh, it's the logo, god damn it, got it 2 secconds after posting this.

[-] flamingos@feddit.uk 62 points 11 months ago

Just in case anyone else stumbles across this and is confused, I'll explain in more detail.

On Linux there are two display server protocols, the very old X11 and the newer Wayland, which was designed as a successor to X11 by its maintainers.

Elon Musk announced today that he is renaming Twitter to X (yes, just X). The above posts takes the mick out of this on this by announcing a social media website called Wayland, i.e. the successor to Musk's X.

[-] hypelightfly@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

To expand, one of his early businesses was X.com which was a payment processor and sold to paypal and eventually shutdown. He bought the domain again back in 2017 and it now redirects to twitter.

[-] june@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

He’s also been wanting to name something X for a while. When Ford wouldn’t let him name the Model 3 the Model X (so his cars would spell SEX) he must have sat on his laurels until he had a brain aneurysm big enough to make him think it’s a good idea to dump the Twitter brand for a math problem.

[-] TableCoffee@lemmy.ca 13 points 11 months ago

Isn't it that he wanted model E but that's the one Ford wouldn't allow? Because there is a Tesla model X. He wanted to spell SEXY but instead he now has S3XY.

[-] june@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Ah yea, that’s right. I misremembered.

[-] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Talk about callbacks...

[-] hazeebabee@slrpnk.net 4 points 11 months ago

Thank you, this is just the kind of thorough explination i needed to understand this meme lol

[-] vicfic@iusearchlinux.fyi 2 points 11 months ago

Ooooh, it's toasting elmo's x. Thanks for clearing that up 😃.

[-] Noughmad@programming.dev 21 points 11 months ago

It's not just the logo, the domain name is extremely similar too (x.com vs x.org).

Big brands like to own all variants of their domain (so you can't register google.org or facebook.net, for example). But X can't do that.

[-] yesimprogun@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago

Like Weyland-Yutani?

[-] transmatrix@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago
[-] ccf@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago

you can embed an image by doing ![you can put optional alt text here](URL)

[-] flamingos@feddit.uk 4 points 11 months ago

Bit random, but good to know.

[-] StudioLE@programming.dev 3 points 11 months ago

It's markdown syntax: https://www.markdownguide.org/basic-syntax/#images-1

It follows the pattern of the link syntax which is why it comes across a little chaotic

[-] TWeaK@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

Dammit for some reason I thought this was some kind of rare, unknown game cover for a game called XCOM Enemy.
