I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon than use a Comcast product.

Does that answer your question?

If Fios, Verizon hands down. Symmetric, they don’t do data caps, etc.

I’m not saying they’re a great company put anything, but the less bad in my opinion.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Agreed. Unless it's the 5g Verizon home Internet, then I'd begrudgingly to with Comcast

[–] borari@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago

Exactly. Internet delivered to the home by some form of wired connection will always be better than internet delivered via cellular, regardless of whether it’s an old-school hotspot or a newer 5g router with the cellular modem built in.

As far as ISPs go, Fios is pretty good. I have them, they’re relatively cheap for 1Gbps symmetrical, I regularly speed test at like 980Mbps, I get a regular public IP (no cgnat), the pub ip my router pulls only rotates when the router power cycles, the ONT box is just Ethernet so I can use my MikroTik and not have to dick around with making an ISP supplied modem/router pass through, idk I’m happy.

Not sure if they support ipv6 in my market, I just have all that disabled on my router. I know I know, I should stand it up, but I really don’t feel like it.

Damn, it seems they only have 5G available.

Guess I'm doing Xfinity! yay.... i really enjoyed having a choice of ISP in my old address. it's really gonna fucking suck going back to random power outages with no explanation and constant disconnects.

Xfinity, because fuck you!

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Either of the two fiber options would probably be better than Comcast. Ask your neighbors, if you have any, what they have.

If you're hosting any servers like Plex you may want to make sure the fiber companies offer a static IP if they use CGnat.

Avoid xfinity/comcast

Fuck Comcast with a rusty spoon.

Verizon sells you a service, and doesn't care about you

Comcast actively hates you - it's like going into a business relationship with your ex-wife while your still fighting in court over the divorce settlement

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Avoid Xfinity at all costs.

If Brightspeed and GloFiber are fiber then them hands down. We have a local fiber provider in town and it’s rock solid.

[–] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

yeah i never even heard of these! they weren't even presented as options until i did some digging. yay. prob gonna do brightspeed cuz glofiber website is ass lol

[–] BioMyth@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

Glofiber is great! I've used them for a few years now and they have been really reliable & easy to work with. If you do any self-hosting they do have double NAT but after a quick call to support I was able to get a public ip without any cost.

There is a turd option but you'll be giving money to a fascist

Verizon is annoying but at least they aren’t Comcast. Also if they offer Fios you can get service that’s 10-100x faster, especially if you have a need for upload speeds.

[–] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

man I'm on fiber now at the ols address, it's so nice to have 400Mbps uploads. wish this isp served a little bit more broadly

Back in the day when i was forced to use Comcast (xfinity), you would be charged out the ass monthly if you used Comcast's equipment (modem/router).

Now... to use Comcast's highest speed plan, their customers are forced to use their equipment. Don't worry, no rental fee.

Now if you understand Comcast like I do... this is a ultragigagigantic red flag. They would never in a trillion billion years ever do something for free when they could charge you.

I bet right now youre wondering "What is the catch?". Well Comcast offers a cheap $10 a month internet plan. Sounds great right? Except the people on this plan leech off of the connection of those who pay Comcast their blood money for their highest tier plan using the equipment they force their high speed customers to use. You would be literally paying Comcast to host their other customers internet.

Capitalism.

why do they hate us?!

[–] averyminya@beehaw.org 1 points 1 week ago

Does T-Mobile not have their 5G wifi near you?
