Even though Trump LITERALLY said this would be the Last Election if he wins it's the DEMOCRATS who are trying to Eliminate Elections!

[-] llamatron@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago

I thought making it the last election was what Trump was promising?

Dark MAGA

Have we actually gone full circle on this one? Fuck Joe Biden from dumbass right --> Let's Go Brandon from more dumbass right --> "Dark Brandon" take back by the dems --> "Dark MAGA" pathetic copy by the right? That's kind of hilarious.

It's not as basic as that. What they mean by it is a complete rejection of enlightenment ideals and democracy itself in favor of brutal totalitarianism.

I wonder what it's like to be that blatantly crazy.

It feels like either the Obama or Trump precidency unlocked the unhinged alt-right in the US.

This is such a gigantic historical event that we need a big investigation.

What triggered this?

I realize that it didn't happen over one night, but the change has been extreme in a very short period of time.

It would be interesting to see a timeline combined with a chart of political divide in the US population.

But it is probably not somethibg we will ever see, as I believe it has to do with changes as to how social networks push content, something they will never disclose.

Lack of consequences is what happened. Lack of spine in republicans who favor party over the country. Lack of judicial oversight. Some stupid assumption that politicians were above scrutiny or that the public would be intelligent enough to not vote for someone like that. That’s reverse order but yeah.

Do you remember the Tea Party? They were not the beginning of the story.

Were you there for Reagan's administration? The ending fairness doctrine? They were not the beginning either, but they play a role in this too. A lot of runway was paved by that.

The John Birch Society. The business plot. The "lost cause" myth. Further still. This story really begins with slavery, and our failure to atone for it.

Yeah, I remember the Tea Party, no I was not there for Reagans administration, I have heard of the John Birch Society, I realize this has been a long time comming.

But it seems like it accellerated quickly in the last fifteen years, and I am interested in what triggered the accelleration.

The right is always emboldened by economic instability, and whenever outgroups they vilify gain more acceptance in society. Yet I can't help but think Russia getting a de facto asset into office has had a lot to do with it.
