Yes you should definitely check before whether or not the device is supported. You can find it for LineageOS here: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/
You may also have a look on /e/OS: https://doc.e.foundation/devices
Oh, /e/ is a really good suggestion.
There is always the route of compiling your own kernel, it all depends on how adventurous you feel… and how much spare time you have.
Edit: /e/OS has a quite big selection of phones if you just drill down into their docs
