Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
i'm just a little disappointed woman seem to consistently be a minority here
I wonder why this is? (Serious) Tiktok has significantly more female users than male... Maybe it's a format thing?
Barrier to entry, with tech still being male dominated
i still wonder why that is when sites like lemmy and reddit are just as open to everyone as tiktok.
is this about staying away from the hateful reddit nerds?
yeah im already starting to get that feeling, but are they disproportionaly being banned, like what is actually happening?
is it that bad? is there something that can be done about it?
Thank you for sharing
Do you want the moderators to pin your comments on every post and make them glitter? What are they supposed to do? Intrude your social life so you can spend more time on lemmy?
Wdym bye. I apologise for being aggressive. I was not in a good mood then.
lemmy is accessible in the same manner that IRC is, but chances are, unless you're at least thirty. Or a huge hyper nerd like me, you have no idea what the fuck IRC even is, or don't know that it isn't dead.
It's not about accessibility, it's about awareness and users.
i bet a few obscure linux packages uses it for support, better than discord.
oh for sure, lots of discussion takes place on IRC channels, basically any prominent application/piece of software has an IRC channel.
But the average person won't even be aware of it's existence unfortunately.
TikTok only has slightly more female users, it's a pretty even split.
Huh... Actually globally it looks like there's slightly more male users, but US monthly users is 60% female 40% male
the unfortunate reality of the tech and IT space in the last twenty years and even up until now. It's better now, but not great.
The only way to fix it is to simply have more women on the platform unfortunately.
most women aren't internet nerds. sorry to disappoint you.
the ones in my life seem to use the internet almost as much as me.
regardless of that i'd love for lemmy to not be a place just for male internet nerds.
well, then be get ready for it to get as shitty as reddit, as it gets flooded by a diverse set of assholes instead of a select set of assholes who at least don't take shit too seriously.
i'm sure there will be more assholes in general as it grows, but due to the nature of lemmy, i think its gonna boil down to the specific culture and public of the instance in question.
