edit: Libation apps needs you to give it your amazon password and ID, it's foss and I trust it. (editing because seemed important)

Amazon allows you to download the book from Audible, but you need a code/password or something like that to read it. Libation can basically convert these encrypted files into decrypted mp3 files by getting this code from the website, I am pretty sure you can get it too. So, my question is, why aren't there more pirates pirating audiobooks? Why isn't every audiobook on audible available online for free?

I mean, many are, but why is it not more prevalent?

Y'all ever hear of Libby app? It's like piracy with fewer steps.

Love Libby, but my small town library has limited inventory. Is there a virtual library I can get a card for with a larger inventory?

[-] SnowBunting@lemmy.ml 6 points 11 months ago

I too want to know. Sometimes I find a book, but it isn't available.

I believe there do exist places where you can get a virtual library card without living there. New York Public Library is what comes to mind, but don't quote me on that.

[-] iheartneopets@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

That's only for New York residents, unless you're a teen looking to read banned books this year in particular.

[-] radix@lemm.ee 2 points 11 months ago

Ah shoot, I don't know then. I thought there was something but maybe it's some sort of policy that limits cardholders to just residents.

[-] ThisIsNotHim@sopuli.xyz 3 points 11 months ago

Unless the policy changed recently: Brooklyn doesn't require a NY address. I had a Brooklyn card for years, but have never lived in NY. It was about $50 a year.

[-] sergioknight@monyet.cc 2 points 11 months ago

Need to verify a NYC address for this one

[-] TheWoozy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 months ago

I'm pretty sure the state of Kentucky will let anyone get a card.

[-] TheWoozy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago

The Kentucky state library will give anyone a virtual library card. I also have cards from a couple nearby counties that have cooperative agreements with my local library. Libby makes you search each of them separately.

Just checked, and they say it's only for residents?

[-] Vode_An@lemmy.ml 3 points 11 months ago

They don’t enforce it. I have never been to Chicago and use it all the time.

[-] iheartneopets@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

What address did you use? They ask for both a zip code and address.

[-] Vode_An@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 months ago

I don’t remember, I think i just picked a random street and added some random numbers after it

[-] iheartneopets@lemm.ee 3 points 11 months ago

Nice, just did it and it works? I guess we'll see if they ever kick me out. I feel like a spy

[-] NightAuthor@lemmy.world 10 points 11 months ago

I like to add a step back in, where I rip the audiobook and then return the rental to the library. Others get to listen, and I have a copy for whenever I actually get around to listening to it :-)

[-] Grippler@feddit.dk 5 points 11 months ago

I do this with ebooks from them. Just download the epub, strip the DRM, return immediately so someone else can read it and i have my DRM-free offline copy for whenever i have time to read it.

[-] August27th@lemmy.ca 3 points 11 months ago

How does one rip from Libby? The analog hole?

[-] NightAuthor@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

It’s gotten harder lately, the old app would just straight let you download mp3 files by chapter. It’s a bit more complicated now.

I believe this is what I used last time. https://github.com/chbrown/overdrive

[-] Moonguide@lemmy.ml 9 points 11 months ago

Being american/living there is required for that, right?

[-] DreadPotato@sopuli.xyz 1 points 11 months ago
[-] Moonguide@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

You sure? Just downloaded and it required a library card.

[-] DreadPotato@sopuli.xyz 2 points 11 months ago

Yes it does, i use the one from my local library even though it's not a US library. Everything is checked out on my regular library account, i just access the materials (usually the English books I read) through libby. I'm granted access to Libby through my local library.

[-] Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago

Right but the card doesnt have those requirements. It says it does but nowhere enforces it. Chicago, new york, kentucky etc all work.

[-] Moonguide@lemmy.ml 1 points 11 months ago

Oh, really? Damn, I'll get right on that, then. Thanks!
