I think it's a complete lack of historical context among other things (media soft power, appeal to right wing westerners and men in particular). People have no idea just how evil Japan was during WW2, probably because they didn't do the unforgivable crime of killing white people and mainly killed Asians. And then the same people that did all these crimes and their descendants have basically run Japan since. Personally I think it's great when a Chinese streamer goes and pisses on the shrine to honor imperial war criminals and mass murderers
Atrocities are regularly denied or downplayed. It's disturbing to suggest they don't know at all, but I suppose it is the case for some. I think plenty know enough, similar to how people know about the US or Israel but they justify the crimes or pass the blame.
I think a huge number of people don't know and a lot know but don't care. Also ww2 was heavily propagandized in the west to the point that people think the US won that was, while in reality it was the USSR that did the heaviest lifting
