I’m a marine service engineer and let me tell you one thing, private boat owners are some of the worst people I’ve ever come across, they want it all but looks in disgust when you tell them the price and accept no fault of their own when their unserviced piece of somehow still floating shit needs a major overhaul because they thought it would be cheaper to not service their ship or use cheap unoriginal parts that doesn’t last as long. They will call you on short notice and expect you to be done before you even begin. I fucking hated it. At the same time I was working on a shipyard, that was way better, there it was only the inspector who was an idiot.

That comes (IMO and just based on what I read on the internet) in every profession and job that has somewhat direct contact with a customer/client.

Example from mine:
Customer is a doctor.
Customer fucked a thing up and instead of asking us (MSP and supporter of his documentation software), they tried to restore the database from their backup software (which we also support) by themself.
(Side note: We can support it but customer has no maintenance contract)
Customer fucks the restore up and the database doesnt come up again.
We tried to to restore it -> No dice. Backup disk not readable.
I investigate the disk -> sector errors. On top it's formatted as exFAT.
(Side note: The other disk (2 in total) had data from >20 days ago at the time of issue. So in total he was about to loose 20 days of patient history)
I painstakingly clone the disk and somehow get it to a working state in which Windows doesnt lock up.
Together with the support of the backup software I was able to extract the media and patient history DB from backup.
Now my boss is working on restoring the database to a working state.

Thing is: This happened before.
Boss said last time the customer got help from a patient that has IT knowledge (lol). This time it was a relative (double lol).
If the relative won't be disowned, idk really ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh man, preaching to the choir here. The things I’ve seen… or had people ask me to do. No, I will not endanger the lives of your crew, yourself, and everyone in a two nautical mile radius of you. Yes you can buy something like it (but not built to marine grade) online and install it yourself (poorly) for a third of the price, but you’ll be either doing it all over again soon, having me fix it, or killing yourself.

Edit: I will say that managing the shipyard was worse for me. It was during covid and everyone was so demanding. I was yelled at, threatened, we had a guy rampage through the shop convinced we’d sold his outboard because the repairs were taking so long. No man, yamaha was 6 months wait for parts, like we told you. It was definitely because I was the face everyone saw and shielded the techs as best I could. But man, that was the end for me in the industry. 30 years and I’m out, going back to school.

Yea, I was offered a promotion to be foreman for the subcontractor I was working for, That was the quickest and sternest no I’ve ever given. Fuck that, never in a million years, you could offer me all the money in the world and the answer would still be fuck no and fuck you.

I’m actually back at school, not because I necessarily wanted to, but 187kg of MaK 32A piston fell from above and fucked my back and crushed my right leg, so I didn’t really have a choice. But at least I can study with a monthly payout comparable to my old salary.

Oh shit, I’m so sorry you got injured. That sounds brutal. Still, thats great you’ve got money coming in while you retrain. I’m going the starving student for a bit, just till after Christmas anyways. I’m learning GIS and mapping with drones, what are you taking?

[–] Junkers_Klunker@feddit.dk 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I we the same person? I am literally doing the same thing.

yea, my physical injuries sucked, but that was peanuts compared to my mental health. When they were about to move me from the engineroom, the paramedics injected me with gods combo of Fentanyl and Ketamine for the pain, but that gave me a psychosis that I’m still dealing with today.

Whaaa? No way?! Though I do think there’s something related with boat people and maps/geography. I know at least three people in the industry with geography degrees. I’m loving it, every day I’m excited to learn new things and make beautiful maps. It’s a welcome change to waking up dreading the day. Though that had more to do with my work management than the actual work.

Yeah that will fuck you up for sure. Godspeed on steady progress to more stable mental health.

Der er selvfølgelig en del mennesker, der tror, at de er Guds gave til verden, og at alt skal gøres med det samme.
