Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Both candidates were pro war. War is the top polluting activity humans do. People chose not to vote last time because we had absolutely miserable candidate choices, an undemocratic primary, and formal war crimes support from our own party. Anyone who wags a finger after that shenanigans and talks about climate in isolation from the rest of it is missing the forest through the trees.

[–] NonconfrontationaI@lemmy.ml 34 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Both parties are also pro record fossil fuel extraction.

[–] tachikoma@lemmy.today -2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

How big of a record is each trying to break? Just by a hair? Or trying to break the record for years?

[–] BanMeFromPosting@lemmy.ml 7 points 4 days ago

Why do you people always make it out like the democrats are just barely beyond perfect? The reality is they're abhorrent monsters. Biden didn't just make it worse by a hair, He made it fucking terrible

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

So, if anyone was wondering, this- is the bOtH siDEs psyop bullshit that you all hear about.

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

Pretty much, sadly it describes the majority of Lemmy as a whole given its foundation.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world -2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yes. "Anyone who doesn't vote for my party is a Russian psyop"

SOUNDS REASONABLE

All of the comments above your stupid one actually list reasons and justifications for people's decisions.

Care to elaborate? Or are you a Schumer bot? Blue maga? You here to scare people away from the scary working class reps?

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

is a Russian psyop

Your words, not his. Plenty of troll factories and gullible groups around the world, but the money pours down from where it pours down.

Both sides are not the same, one has been way worse for the environment than the other, the majority of this thread is rife with ignorance, plenty of it wilful. This thread might as well be called a theater.

You are both-siding this and appealing to perfection as a solution, both common appeals used in manipulation, just like the majority of this theater is doing.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world -3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

No, and you are ignoring all history and past elections as are all of the other DNC shills.

There has ONLY BEEN PROGRESION TO THE RIGHT. The overtone window has shifted so far to the RIGHT because ymof you centrist fucks and your capitulating to fascists, that yes, both parties are fascist.

Your stupid argument that both parties are not the same is not something people make. If you go to a party and you want a drink, and you can only have coke or a bottle of dasani water, you are drinking a coke product. You do not get a choice eve. Though they are different.

We are at a point where we are literally running against cyberpedophile Nazis that are doing warcrimes, and establishing concentration camps and your "opposition party" is running on "restoring ACA tax credits"

Since Im just a dumb American who doesn't understand anything, can you please explain to me why the democratic party STRUGGLES to beat what I mentioned above?

Why is their current platform not to "hold immediate trials for treason and warcrimes", "dismantling concentration camps and locations missing migrants" " delivering free healthcare and education like 85% of Americans want" "taxing billionaires and corporations into submission", "stopping support for the most hated country and leader in the world, Israel and Netanyahu"

Please explain

What a garbage spew of accusations. This thread is about climate change, and it's clearly you want to derail with a lot of baggage, which ironically enough, one side is still considerably worse than the other for each and every issue you try to shotgun with. I doubt you are American, and I doubt the why of each needs to be explained in anything other than an theathered echo-chamber.

You are both-siding this and appealing to perfection as a solution, both common appeals used in manipulation, just like the majority of this theater is doing.

Again, and again, and again, and again, and again ...

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is exactly why I don’t argue with these kids. It’s a massive waste of time. you’ve far more patience than I have.

[–] tachikoma@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

I think you're mistaken in thinking they are a child. I suspect it's more like 3-5 psychologist sitting in a room thinking up the "perfect" response to drive their narrative.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world -2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Dismissal without rebuttal. Got it

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

The last rebuttal with hard facts and links just made you spew a word salad of gaslighting while ignoring anything you were offered. I don't have any hope for you, I'm just annotating for other readers caught up in the theater.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world -2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Sorry reading is hard for you

You said people claim, "both sides are the same"

I said, "Your stupid argument that both parties are not the same is not something people make. If you go to a party and you want a drink, and you can only have coke or a bottle of dasani water, you are drinking a coke product. You do not get a choice eve. Though they are different."

You said, "I was talking about climate change" and then quoted your own false claim about people both sides-ing the argument

Are you malfunctioning?

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You’re an embarrassing person. You should know that.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Compelling arguments to dismantle our claims

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 3 points 4 days ago

You don’t even deserve a compelling argument. That this other person is willing to slum, doesn’t mean you earned yourself a discussion. I laugh at fools, I don’t give them my time.

[–] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Also, horrible example, coke is not water, yet you both-sides it because "it is a coke product". Plenty of differences, a lot of them directly affecting people's health. Or perhaps as apt as you obliviousness of how bad of a gaslight it is.

Just say what you mean, "it is a coke product" is a metaphor for "it is influenced by American lobbyists" so you imply people should both-sides it and apply no nuance.

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world -2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Hey congrats, we are almost through my first comment.

Now here is the rest that you keep ignoring

"We are at a point where we are literally running against cyberpedophile Nazis that are doing warcrimes, and establishing concentration camps and your “opposition party” is running on “restoring ACA tax credits”
