It’s a shame because my wife and I are saving up for an EV but I’m worried by the time we’re ready the models won’t be there. They’re already cutting the Hyundai Ioniq 6. Our top contender.

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Buy used. They will still be serviced at repair shops and you can get a 2year old EV for half the price of new.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Companies are scrambling to start making more hybrids and EVs now with gas prices so high and EVs in such high demand.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Y'know if they hadn't killed off all of their fuel efficient sedan models they'd have a fuel efficient small car to offer the people shocked by gas prices...

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

People really weren't buying those though. It's a hot take, but I think they made the right choice on that one. They followed it up with the wrong choice to not develop hybrid wagons/cross overs. I don't think anyone saw the return of the minivan.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

People stopped buying sedans because the car industry made a concerted effort to demarket them. They've been pushing SUVs for nearly 30 years, trying really hard to get people to stop buying sedans and were too successful. Now there's a fuel crisis and no sedans in production (from American brands at least) so the manufacturers are getting caught with their pants down again

I do wonder if the fleet market is sufficient to keep both sedans and vans in production, since each makes a very competent fleet vehicle platform for different usecases, see the venerable Crown Victoria for example

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm not sure. I think they were reacting to buyers, not the other way around. I remember the late 90s and early 2000s. SUVs and crossovers were relatively new and exploding in popularity. Partly as a back lash against the "soccer mom" minivan stereotype. I never liked them, but I also never liked sedans. I'm definitely a wagon guy. It's sad that they all became crossovers.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 1 points 6 days ago

The last 5-10 years have been primarily reacting to buyers (and choosing not to market sedans more) but there was a specific concerted push to change market opinions toward SUVs and SUV-like vehicles, so I'm inclined to instead blame marketing with a healthy sprinkling of availability.

The last time I bought a sedan I really had to go out of my way to find the only one on the lot that happened to be in my budget and in my desired age/mileage/mechanical shape, and I happened to test drive all 5 sedans that they had on that lot. If I were indifferent towards the body/chasis style I probably never would've looked at the sedans just by pure math of there being easily a hundred or more SUVs, a smattering of trucks and vans and that was about it

Don't be a prick dude. The person mentioned having a wife, that might include kids, and at least they're looking into getting an EV instead of a 4 door short bed V8 pickup truck that will never see a day of work. Pick better targets

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It does include kids. And the in-laws are a highway away.

I don’t drive daily to work and use public transit and walk when I can, but we do every now and then need to drive somewhere. The E-Bike doesn’t work there.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works -4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Are you fucking kidding?

Targets? I lightheartedly suggest someone get an e-bike, and suddenly you think they're a "target"?

The fact that someone has a wife means that they can't buy an e-bike on the off chance that they might have kids?

Fuck, man. What the hell is wrong with you? What the hell is wrong with your country. People are so car-brained that merely light-heartedly suggesting an e-bike is considered an attack? You have some serious fucking issues.

[–] Mkras@europe.pub 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have an e-bike adapted for carrying 2 kids that I use daily for kindergarten commute. Can't recommend it enough. I live in Belgium though.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even if they don't replace a car, they're great vehicles. They're fun to ride, you rarely have to worry about traffic jams, they're cheap to operate, and you can do a lot of your own maintenance.

Does yours have seats on the back? A trailer? I've seen a variety of solutions for transporting kids. The trailer is the solution I see most often, and it looks like the most luxurious option for the kids. They often look like they're some aristocrat being carried on a palanquin, sprawled out and enjoying the ride.

[–] Mkras@europe.pub 2 points 6 days ago

I mean, for me they effectively replace the car. We own one, but since we have the e-bike, I don't drive at all. I use the trailer for shopping if needed. And yes, we used the trailer + the small seat behind my seat. Basically all three kids could ride with me, but the battery depletes fast and I am not sure about the general strain put on the bike's structure with so much weight. The bike is not technically ours but leased from the company my wife works at. In Belgium, at some point the taxes get so high that people choose untaxed benefits at work (like a bike leasing or vouchers, even a company car) instead of salary hikes. We now own a second e-bike with two separate seats so we can have family trips. We'll see how it works. To clarify: I do NOT believe that you can always replace a car with an e-bike. But in the rather wealthy area where we live, the bike infrastructure is great and everything is very walkable, so it is possible to greatly reduce your reliance on cars. The Netherlands are far superior to Belgium in this respect.

[–] athatet@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well it turns out they do, in fact, have kids. Also maybe drink some water and chill a little.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Who the fuck cares if they have kids. You're allowed to own an ebike, even if you have kids.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You seem like the one with issues brother...

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Because I think it's ridiculous to be told you're "targetting" someone by merely suggesting they might want to buy an ebike?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're certainly entitled to your opinions and interpretations.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But, you should look at yourself if you think that someone is attacking someone else merely by showing them a picture of a cool e-bike. What is wrong in your life that you think that's an attack? Why are you so incredibly defensive?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Have I been defensive? Are you sure that isn't projection? I gave you my opinion in a couple of sentences and you've spun out about it all day.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No, I'm aggressive, not defensive. You took something that was said completely innocently and interpreted it as an attack. That's defensive.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Still spinning out over this are we?

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No, but I see you had the need to come back to comment. Why are you so bothered by someone merely linking to an ebike?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I am enjoying your overblown reaction, that's all

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

My overblown reaction? You're the one who described sharing a picture of an ebike as an attack. You've got issues, boy.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I never used the word attack, please don't put words in my mouth.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ah, so you target someone, but once they're targeted they're not attacked, they're... cuddled?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Targeted and attacked with silly propaganda? You are way too to serious of a person, it must be exhausting. Go ride your electric scooter or whatever.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

your electric scooter or whatever

Yeah man, you're definitely a car-brained person. It's sad how threatened you are by anybody who doesn't live that way.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No. It's a normal term in general use. Why, does it offend you?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think it's silly, not offensive. I live in a rural area, lemme ride my bike 29 miles to the store for my weeks groceries hurhur car-brained

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Europeans who live in rural areas tend to take the train. Hurhur, car-brained.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There is no bus where I live dipshit, I don't have the choice. That's the point, why your point is silly.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

You're so defensive!
