Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

I think this is the right approach they're taking:
This is the same logic used for decades where young kids weren't allowed to use calculators for simple addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, but calculators were a requirement for higher Algebra and above.
But that isn't the approach they're taking, that's the approach they're reversing course on. They're now banning AI for pre-K through 12th grade
You're right. I misread that. I think they're making a mistake with that, but I get it. How to adapt the early education methods to a world with AI now has no proven path yet.
Isn't the whole thing that none of the skills you need to deal with an AI world come from actually using AI?
And AI specifically degrades the kind of critical thought that high school is supposed to make absolutely certain that the kids have before leaving.
High school also functions as a method to prepare students for how to interact with the world. Dumping them into a world where AI is commonplace with no knowledge or mental protection from it would be a disservice to them.
Simple preparation.
Don't use it. Commit acts of arson on resources that prop it up.
I'll take my masters in education now.
I can see having targeted coursework to teach students to use AI productively and responsibly. Outside of that, the temptation to let AI do all the work and learn nothing is strong, and I’m not sure it’s worth interfering with those few precious years where kids can become proficient at reading, writing and math to drench their brains with AI. Besides, they’ll probably use it outside of school anyway, making school be the one place where they’re forced to do their own thinking.
Your reading comprehension is ass. They piloted it for high school students for just a few weeks before realizing it was a bad idea for all ages. It doesn't make sense to use chatbots in any learning environment, where you have no way to verify output.
Cool, so is yours apparently. Someone else already pointed this out , and I already admitted my mistake.
You're certainly welcome to your own opinion, but we've already covered counter arguments to that point too..
I can't see that comment, I probably blocked them or something.
Why golly thanks
How? By asking their chatbot to verify each statement? School is a place for facts and trusted sources; I don't see any convincing reason to change that.
I mean to be fair half of what they teach in American history class is just utter bullshit anyway so AI ain't doing no harm there. "The pilgrims and the native americans were super nice friends and nothing bad ever happened." "Thomas Jefferson might have had slaves, but he was like really nice to them."
Not a real argument
I wasn't making an arguement for using AI I was just being tounge in cheek
Sure thing, friend.
Wow, you're really failing on the reading comprehension tonight. This is explained in the immediately proceeding sentence to the one you quoted of mine which you either skipped or did not comprehend. That sentence is "even those with only a little bit of knowledge". The student wouldn't have to ask a chatbot. The student would already know enough domain knowledge of the example topic to know the LLM output is wrong.
I'm not sure whats up with your abrasiveness tonight, but I'm not interested in it. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Have a nice night.
Abrasive? I think you're extremely thin skinned. I called your reading comprehension ass and you already admitted it was ass, let's move on.
This would immediately fail for any factual question though, like, "what is the currency used in Japan?" If the chatbot responds "yuan", the only domain knowledge that would allow you to see that as bullshit is the actual currency used in Japan, but in which case, why ask?
