Dementia is no joke. Get your shingles vax, and for that matter other applicable vax's, too. There is a significant reduction in risk of dementia for shingles, and RSV, flu, and covid vax's. Proposed mechanism is general reduction in neural inflammation.

I wish I could get my shingles vax. I fall into this stupid age range where I was born and caught chicken pox before its vaccination existed, but I'm still "too young" to receive the shingles vaccination. Never mind that I've seen younger people than me experience shingles, and that shit's no joke. I'd get the vaccine in a heartbeat if it were possible.

Alas, I'll just have to hope I don't spontaneously develop it within the next 12 or so years.

my pharmacy charges $100 for a shot of shingle vaccine (if it's not covered by insurance). i can think of few better public investments than vaccination.

You might be able to talk your medical professional into getting it for you regardless. Worth a try.

When I get dementia I can listen to my favourite album by The Caretaker for the rest of my life though!

If I had shingles as a teenager, is the vaccine still recommended?

holy shartballs that's way too young for shingles. i thought getting it in my early 30s was bad enough.

Yes. Only those who are pregnant, currently have shingles, or are allergic to the ingredients should avoid it.

I wonder if GLP-1s will end up reducing the risk of dementia since they decrease inflammation.

Is this recent science? My partner was talking about the shingles dementia risk just the other day. Right before I got my yearly vaccinations!

If you click the links above you will see the lay articles are from July and August of 2025. How do you define recent?

The study itself is from June 2025: Lower risk of dementia with AS01-adjuvanted vaccination against shingles and respiratory syncytial virus infections https://www.nature.com/articles/s41541-025-01172-3
