Considering the "left" in America, is just right-wing light, here it's more like.
"Left": let's hold the breaks down so we don't slip further back
"Centrist": let's let go of the breaks so we can stop when we get back to the right amount of racism

Just because the US doesn't have a left wing party doesn't mean it lacks leftists. There's a lot, but leftists have never had political representation thanks to decades of suppression tactics from the conservatives (that includes liberals)
That's why the political machine is scared of people like Zohran and Bernie, because they exist outside of the allotted window

Well, they're part of the same system as Republicans, neither party works in a vacuum, they enable the Republicans to get away with what they do. They're both equally as shitty, because they're just two halves of the same thing. All owned and operated by the same billionaires and corporations.

Following this metaphor, I see it as: US Left: car's in neutral on a steep incline, foot is off the brake and they aren't sure if they're moving backwards or everyone outside is moving forward. Regardless they think they're doing a great job.
Center: same as above but they're complaining that everyone outside is going too fast that they may have even gone past their destination.
Right: same car, same place, but the car's in reverse and the foot is on full throttle. The center is still complaining about the speed but they're enjoying the view. The US Left is now fully aware of the backwards movement but it doesn't want to take the seatbelt off for the sake of self preservation at the cost of everyone else outside. The rest of the world is either steering clear or has been reversed in to like in one of rear-end insurance scams.
Driver changes every 4 years.
If by US left you mean the DNC, it seems more like they have their feet on both the brake and the accelerator, and they don't know which gear they are in [they are in reverse]. They are trying to figure out which pedal to lift first.
This one seems to be the most apt, since none of them are moving forward.
Right these days is basically "Let's back over those children over there and set the car on fire while we're inside."
