Overview:

Electric Vehicles are a key part of our tomorrow and how we get there. If we can get all the fossil fuel vehicles off our roads, out of our seas and out of our skies, we'll have a much better environment. This community is where we discuss the various different vehicles and news stories regarding electric transportation.

It'd be hilarious (annoying, but hilarious) if he gets remembered in history for that reason.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Seems more likely that it's Elon who get credited with that.

Idk. Elon had a hand in popularising EVs before he went nuts, but Trump's the one who destabilised the world fuel markets.

He has always been nuts, it was just hidden before

But this assumes that the higher fuel prices are the main driver for the switch and I personally don't think this is the case.

Why Tesla took off was not because it was electric - we've had electric cars before. The real reason was that it's actually a good car and a viable alternative to an internal combustion one. People weren't just buying them to save the environment or save on the fuel costs. They were choosing the superior product.

Nowadays this is the case with pretty much all EVs. It's not a gimmick anymore but you can actually daily drive one and it's in many ways superior to the internal combustion alternatives. If they were still slow, small, ugly and with a low range I don't think the cheaper cost of "refueling" would matter.

The real reason was that it’s actually a good car

No it's not. The quality control is the worse compared to any other car company. Even the cheapest chinese EVs have better fit and finish than the most Teslas.

I don't say that as a fan of China. Fuck China for so many reasons and thier cars are not great but they are of better quality than Tesla.

I say this as someone who has driven every Tesla model and some models multiple iterations. I have also driven BYD, Xping, Xiomi, Aion, and Zeeker.

What I say is anecdotal but it comes from actual experience. Tesla is shit and musk is diarrhea.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

None of that existed when the first Model S was released. It was miles ahead the competition.

[–] brawndo@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And the quality was shit then too. By most accounts even worse than now.

So your point was?

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

..that the reason Tesla took off was not because it was electric - we've had electric cars before. It's because it was an actually good electric car that people could use as their daily driver. It looked good, the range was acceptable, the acceleration was on par with or above most supercars and it received a 5 start rating in crash tests from both, the NHTSA and Euro NCAP. It is the car that demonstrated that an EV is now a viable option.

It’s because it was an actually good electric car

Now you have said that twice.

And that was the point of my original argument. That it was not a good car.

I don't need to repeat myself for anyone with any reading comprehension and the ability to recall that information.

For you please refer and read carefully, perhaps multiple times, what i wrote.

I'll even modify it for you to eliminate your issue...

The quality control is the worse compared to any other car company. Even the cheapest cars have better fit and finish than the most Teslas.

But this assumes that the higher fuel prices are the main driver for the switch and I personally don't think this is the case.

I mean, that's the thrust of the whole article. Not just price, but stability and energy independence for govts.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The article says that high-gas prices is what pushed the sales below 50% - not that high fuel prices are the main driver of EV adoption.

[–] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm literally not seeing the difference between the two statements.

The straw that breaks the camel's back isn't any heavier than the pile of straw already loaded on it.

Musk barely hit 7% market share, it was gas prices that increased EV sales.

Also, Musk did not start, nor was a founder of Tesla, that's another lie he propagates.
