Why are F-35s so difficult to mass produce anyway? Are there super-labor intensive composites or something?

Mix of (1) modern warplanes genuinely being hard to make, (2) corruption and (3) Chinese sanctions on a bunch of companies that sell to the Pentagon.

Wasn't the F-35 supposed to be cheaper? Surely they were designed for ease of manufacture?

It was supposed to be a lot of things.
What it became is mostly a ridiculously expensive failure.
A true example of the corrupt MIC doing its work.
