Looks like it's time to carry a dummy phone with you if you decide to visit the US. Not really sure why any non-citizens would want to do that at this point though.

Interestingly, iOS 27 has a new “2 phones can share 1 number and you can swap between them” which didn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

What in the what now? Just between apple phones or with android or other OS? Guess I hafta go read…

https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/iphone-handoff-one-number-two-phones/

But The Apple documentation (https://support.apple.com/en-us/127274) mentions that your iCloud gets synced between both devices, so now I’m confused what the purpose of this is

It's so you can buy more phones

Dang, I had other ideas!

What you need:

Two devices running iOS 27 or later that are: Connected to Wi-Fi Sharing the same Apple Account Using Messages in iCloud to ensure messages sync Signed into FaceTime and iMessage with the same Apple Account An eSIM from a carrier that supports iPhone Handoff: USA: T-Mobile Germany: Telekom

Haven't actually tried it but T-Mobile digits supposedly let's you do what you seek.

it makes sense in the backdoor sense. esims. so now uncle sam can “be” that 2nd phone.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Uncle Sam could always be that 2nd phone, the network is ridiculously insecure. It's so well-known, the spooks didn't even stop Veritasium from making a video on it. Hell, it doesn't take a state-level actor either, it takes a motivated individual and that's pretty much all.

[–] time2lose@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I'm not even sure why would they even need to see your phone.
All these idiots use cloud, just requesting data from iOS/google is sufficient in most cases. I think they don't even have to ask, they gotta have direct api access.

if you decide to visit the US.

There is a lot more reasons not to do that than there are reasons to go there.

The decision includes citizens, anyone within 100 miles from an international airport, border, or national waterway.
