There are indigenous nations

fwiw: the ones that survived and are still coherent/organized enough to still be considered a nation represent a cultural/social/linguistic minority in north & central america -- an overwhelming majority no longer have a nation to claim as their own and the trend becomes stronger the further away from the anglosphere you get.

in other words: either the united states or mexico are closest thing they can identify with as part of a nation and this phenomenon is most prevalent in the american southwest and northern mexico -- geographically & broadly between salt lake city and mexico city.

and it'll forever be odd to me that the worst colonial settler examples that the world had seen thus far in the anglosphere resulted in the most intact and cohesive indigenous nations that are still in existence today while the relatively tame -- but still outrageously inhumane -- settler colonialism practiced in the rest of the latin america has relatively few such indigenous nations still going today.
