How were you meant to complete games that had no save system? (feddit.uk)

Most of the games I played back in the day had some way of resuming your progress at a later date, whether that was an actual save system, a password system, or even a hidden warp zone. What were you supposed to do for longer games that had no way at all of resuming your progress after switching the console off? Get good enough at the start of it that you could play the game faster and eventually complete it in one go, or just leave the console on overnight and continue the next day?

(and yes, my Mega Drive is currently sitting powered on because I couldn't think of a better way to keep my progress)

I'm currently playing Quackshot on the Mega Drive, there's no way of resuming that I can see. I managed to complete the first half in a few hours but the difficulty is really ramping up!

Longplays of that game on YouTube are about 1 hour long. You aren't really expected to complete it on the first time through, and by the time you get good at it, you should basically know how to get through it quickly.

It is my first time playing it, but I'm definitely nowhere near completing it in an hour! I guess it's just how games were made longer back in the day, I imagine if I played it repeatedly I'd eventually get quite quick at the bits I knew.
