This is my only account I am using, since I abandoned my previous main account with same name and icon. My previous account was on beehaw instance at https://beehaw.org/u/thingsiplay , joined 3 years ago. I left that place because I disagree with moderation and switched to lemmy.ml. I do not use multiple accounts at the same time, BTW, always a single main account.
Just curious why .ml?
You mean why this instance specifically? I looked around and there was a few candidates. For one, I wanted a big one with many people. One of the reasons to is, so the instance seems to be lively and won't close too soon. Because I don't want another kbin situation. I don't want want that blocks many instances or get blocked by many (besides the extremes off course).
One that is not tooo much opinionated like beehaw, because I don't want that anymore. I looked into the rules, and some instances had bad rules, don't remember details. It's even run by the Lemmy's developers themselves. Not sure if that is a good thing, but it ensures a bit of longevity I think. And first class support and updates.
Other than that, I don't remember too many details. Why you guys chose the instance you chose?
there is a movement to unsubscribe from .ml communities and to block it from servers, because of the way the admins and their group behave, politically and otherwise. sometimes if an admin bans you from a community for your different opinion, they choose a not fitting rule in the ban message, and go on to ban you from all the other communities where they are a moderator. it is not rare.
when I registered I did not have a particular reason to choose this one, but I'm happy with it, would recommend. slrpnk is also nice. lemmy.world not so much despite the popularity. Otherwise I might try a piefed instance, for the merged crosspost comments and the ability to access Mastodon content
.ml has a reputation of hosting lots of tankies, which is why some people have the whole instance banned, I chose sopuli because low ping
I remember the reason why I didn't chose Sopuli, it was one of the top contenders BTW. At that time I had no idea if that instance is good or bad, and searching in the web for the reputation of an instance wasn't much fruitful. The reason why Sopuli fall out of the contender list was, ...
My goal was to find the biggest and neutral possible instance, with a description and rule set that sounded good enough, and is not blocked by many. I don't know if ml instance was the best choice, and I don't know if Sopuli would be better. But I had to make a choice and tried to do a safe bet, as the ml instance description sounded minimalist and focuses on Open Source and is run by their developers.
I noticed that a few instances are banned. I actually wanted to avoid that, unless the instances are bad or extreme. I don't know what tankies mean btw. But I'm probably not switching that soon away, unless it gets bad.
Tankie is just a pejorative for those that support existing socialist states.
People who say that they are socialists and praise china/putin
Tankies do not "praise Putin," they consider Putin to be a reactionary nationalist. Tankies don't think Putin is some Hitler-level monster trying to take over all of Europe, though, so whenever imperialist countries warmonger with respect to Russia, tankies generally push back on the propaganda.
Tankies do praise China, because China is socialist. Socialists tend to like socialism in practice.
What do you mean by warmonger? Russia has always been interested in gaining land and is invading Ukraine for basically no other reason other than them not wanting to be a 2nd belarus? I speak ESL so maybe I just don't understand
But is china really that socialist they have private property and companies isn't that kinda like saying north korea is democratic because it says democratic in its name and why would a socialist country build a firewall for the internet and roll tanks out in a peaceful protest and more recently shutdown a peacuful protest in hong kong.
And Putin a reactionary nationalist? What is he reacting to? That countries which don't want to be under Russia's thumb tend to ally with the west?
I think you read and fantasize too much into. Not everyone sees it through those eyes. In example, because I like a certain character from a videogame (or even film) does not mean I like everything the person likes. In example I like the character Di Caprio played. It does not mean I'm racist.
