From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Not really, just use something normal that's there to provide software. Fedora (but remember to install video codecs), Arch (but use the AUR with caution), Debian (if you're okay with using neolithic-age software), SUSE (European Fedora ~~with AppArmor instead of SELinux~~), Void (but software availability can suffer).

The BSDs seem cool but it really depends on your hardware if you can run them. NixOS is awesome technology but has problematic business relations[^1] so you might want to take a look at GNU Guix.

[^1]: I'm not totally sure what's going on there. There was something about a community split between Nix (the package manager) and NixOS (the distro) but I don't remember which side is which. Using NixOS with Lix instead of Nix might be what you want.

Oh really? Why did they switch?

I don't know for sure. They announced it one day, but I haven't really caught that much public discussion before that.

It might also be more accurate to say they switched the default selection, since you are able to select the MAC solution in the installer of the desktop versions, it's just that SEL is now the default selection instead off AppArmor.

This was the mail they announced the change in: https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/factory@lists.opensuse.org/message/YN4TCBCU4A2V5G2MWR5EWYF46267BO7F/
