Half-baked critique of capitalism at best. It is the prioritization of profits that hurts workers at home but even more abroad. Consumerism is only a tool to comfort the workers in the core, which has a side effect of being bad for nature. It is not the root evil. Consumerism will decline with the rise of fascism as the workers in the imperial core can and need to be controlled in other ways. The resources for treats will be used in the war machine.
It's an Japanese show animated in 2026 based on a manga written in the late eighties/early 90s, you should be grateful it even critiques capitalism at all.
But I am not, because it puts blame on the workers instead of on those that hold power.

Sure but she's a government assassin in the first place. Having a half-baked view of the world is the reason she works for government doing what she does.
I love GiTS and it does make sense that she has a half baked criticism. It is however not a scene that is able to instill any good criticism in the viewer so I am unsure how this particular scene would 'hold up'. That is pretty much all I wanted to point out. Not every movie has to be a critique of capitalism.
Oh yeah for sure. That's fine. Most of GitS is just "government is bad and corrupt" as a backdrop for sexy ladies and cool ideas about transhumanism. It has very little to say politically and is much more interesting as an exploration of the question of what makes us human or different to computers if we put ourselves in the computers?
I should note I'm not talking about the movie though, but the original 1989 manga and the new 2026 series adaptation of it.
Is the new series good? I only watched the anime movie.
It is an absolutely perfect 1:1 adaptation of the original source material leaving nothing out. I can not recommend it enough, it is very very good. The only thing I will say about it is that it requires concentration and moves very fast at times which can make mental processing of what's occurring slightly difficult if viewing casually. That's true of the original movie too though.
