Rules

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.

  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.

  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!

  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,

  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.

  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ­, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]

  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.

There are some amazing zoos that exist! Here in North Carolina we're lucky to have the NC Zoo, the world's largest natural habitat zoo. It's a decent enough hike to get through the entire zoo in one day because the enclosures are spread across a huge acreage where the animals actually have their relatively normal areas to spread out and be enriched properly. They do incredible conservation work, too.

I'm sorry to anyone who has had poor experiences with zoos. Once, I visited a relative in Virginia when I was younger and went to whatever the local zoo was, and it was horrible. Animals in tiny, simple enclosures. They had a couple of rhinos that only had like.. an acre? ish? to roam around in. I remember looking at my dad and saying "This place is really small..." because I had been to the NC Zoo a few times before.

Aww, I didn't know about the NC Zoo being so cool. I went right through that area and didn't know.

The place I just visited in New York was well incorporated into the local landscape. The first animal we got introduced to there was the river otter at the entrance. I wouldn't have even known it was an exhibit, it was a sectioned off area of the stream running through the park and it looked like it was just meant to keep larger local wildlife out of the zoo.

The otter (Scooter was her name) came when the keeper called her, she followed us back to the area where they check on her and feed her, and she was having the happiest zoomies!

All the other areas looked larger than they likely were required to be, and every animal looked relaxed, and we got to interact hands-on with a few, and they were all very chill.

The worst zoo I was ever at was one near my home. A coworker wanted to go, as they had a baby tiger advertised, which was her fav animal. I was curious where this zoo was, since the area wasn't where I'd picture us getting more than a very small zoo.

It was inside a building in an industrial park! We were both kinda sketched out, but she really wanted to see the tiger, so we went in. It felt like a smuggling operation. Everything was indoors in pens that looked meant for transport. Animals were all very obviously depressed. Not a single thing in there appeared relaxed. We quickly got out of there, and it was thankfully shut down that same summer.

Now that I've worked with animals for a bit, I talk to the keepers about more details of their care, and what regulations they deal with and what rehab or conservation projects they're involved with, and can appreciate a lot of what goes on other than the exhibits, and it's so obvious how much these keepers care about their animals and the support they provide to get animal populations up to return animals to the wild. I don't think anyone would picture animal care as some get-rich type career, it's stinky and dirty work where you can potentially be hurt by animals. These people are there because they care about animals. Some owners I think may give into temptation and cross over into collecting more animals than they have capacity to care for, and then that becomes the problem, but I have gone to many zoos in many states, and there's maybe been 2 or 3 that have been meh, but most are pretty cool. I think zoo haters have either been sadly unlucky and their first one was a crappy one, they just humanize animals in an unrealistic way, or they don't consider the conservation programs they participate in that involve many more animals than are in display.
