What purpose does this trade war with Canada even serve? What's the point of starting it? What is there to gain?
Trump's ego must be sated.
That's what there is to 'gain'.
He's just literally a raving demented lunatic, a sundowning narcissist. A real life cariacature of a mad king, a comic book supervillain.
He doesn't deserve that much credit. He's just an asshole flailing about from a position of unearned privilege and ego
I'm low-key certain he's a foreign agent intended to sabotage the US.
I keep asking myself how that could be wrong, but I've also given up on hoping to understand their weird-as-hell logic about how things 'ought to be. None of it appears to be grounded in reality or reason.
I don't think that's true. Trump, his administration, and the MAGA movement are fascists, not idiots. Fascism is an ideology that sees the problems of capitalism through the lenses of idealism and nationalism. They believe society can only be fixed by a visionary leader unencumbered by traditional limits on power. They don't see class conflict. Instead they see national conflict as the source of societal issues.
When the Nazis were overheating their economy in order to aggressively re-arm, their economic minister proposed some sensible fiscal policy to cool things off. However, these policies would slow the re-armament, so he was fired because he didn't have the willpower to do what needed to be done. In the end, the only way to keep getting the resources needed to keep building the war machine was to invade Poland.
This is the ideology that leads you to devalue international cooperation and instead see other nations as rivals to be dominated. Fascism won't be defeated by calling them stupid. Instead it comes from showing people that the problems of society come from class conflict.
I know you weren't trying to give some big analysis of Trump's ideology. But I can't resist an opportunity to infodump.
You can be both a fascist AND an idiot. Infact I believe one relies on the other as a prerequisite.
Distraction from the Epstein files, chaos to place more ~~bets~~ trades online, makes trump feel better because he keeps saying stupid shit and his fragile little ego gets all twisted the second anyone disagrees or criticises any of the sewage he keeps spewing out of his mouth
No one cares about the Epstein files.
Americans care about gas prices. There could be live video of Ford fucking a gay pig and no one would care. It is ingrained in US culture that the wealthy are entitled to do whatever they want, and the poor support this because they believe that wealth comes from hard work.
Chaos in the markets. If you know what Trump is about to do, you can get richer.
Just have to toss in that hundred grand into his own personal social media site and you can have all the inside info you want!

and don't forget bribes to Trump and his family. Milei has been stuffing Trump's pockets in Argentina and now Milei has privatized 9,000 kms of roads - Mike Harris on steroids.
