I think it’s probably a combination of not being aware that there are ethnic russians in ukraine or that the donbass is predominantly russian, lib brainworms about putin secretly trying to take over all of ukraine and exterminate ukrainian culture, and the sad reality of what fighting “to the last ukrainian” means
