You don't "defeat" an addiction. You always will be an addict, just one that stopped using the substance.

Ah youre correct. Im wrong. Sorry.

Its more like you avoid the substance( like alcohol addiction or nicotine or whatever youre addicted to ) or the pracetice (whether that be gambling addiction or self-harming addiction or whatever) and find that it doesnt impact your life . You dont ever truly 'defeat' an addiction. You just significantly taper its impact to your life.
