Fediverse drama! Even if there is a kernel of truth behind it, the drama around it is always dumber than it should be. IMO a symptom of people wanting control over things as consumers that they simply don’t and never will if they remain consumers. A bit of an insidious trap the Fedi lays for people.
I'm not sure I really understand you.
One of the foundational concepts of opensource software, self hosting, and federated software, is that users have more equity and agency than they would if they were users or "consumers" on a corporate platform.
If you don't want to support the behavior of a developer, you don't have to.
That said, I'm aware that my instance is running piefed, which is at the centre of this drama.
I suspect they mean that you can run your own instance, but in practice most users fall for the 'trap' of using someone else's instance where they have no control over what happens to their accounts and what they post.
I don't think it's that big of a deal and thay you're absolutely right that you don't have to support a developer or that you can hop to another instance, giving users more equity and agency.
Even if you run your own instance, your ability to access most communities is still at the whims of the dictators who run a few large instances.
Yea, this.
I’d say that whether it’s a big deal is up to what people expect and want. The issue I was citing is that Fedi drama often involves, IMO, a disconnect between what the Fedi offers and what people expect.
