That's pretty fucked up. I've been to a shooting range in my state and it I think they designed it so it's impossible for bullets to escape. I mean, maybe if you wanted to shoot through the roof you could manage it.
Outdoor range. Berm stop. Sounds like they just need to raise the berm height and kick morons off the range who shoot too high.
More put an upper stop on outdoor ranges as well stop high shots don't matter. The Swiss have a range that's designed so safe they're approved to shoot across and above an active highway.
If it were a noise complaint I'm with the range because they existed before the school. That said if it's hitting the school it means your range is profoundly unsafe that shit wouldn't fly at a residential range let alone a commercial one and at that point I'm with the school even if it was dumb to choose a spot across from a gunrange.
Kinda hard to prove if someone shoots high unless they do it constantly. I think the better option is the range paying for a physical barrier, essentially creating a berm in between the school and the range but much much closer to the school.
Nah, fuck that, the bullets need to come to a full stop inside the shooting range. You wanna run a business on giving people a place to shoot? It's your responsibility to make sure nobody outside the range is getting shot.
The gun range was there first. It was up to the city planners not to put a fucking middle school in the firing line of a gun range.
And the gun range is perfectly free to remain there and keep operating. This isn't some sort of nuisance like noise, it's a potential case of manslaughter. Owning land and operating a business there doesn't entitle you to externalize the risk of death to people on land you don't even own. If things outside the range are getting shot as anything more than a freak occurrence, that's a failure of the business to plan for what is then clearly a very predictable outcome. I don't give a shit if beyond the range is untamed wilds, a conference of CEOs, a school, a hospital, whatever. None of that changes the fact you don't have the right to pepper the land beyond yours with lead.

Yeah, no shit, that's why I didn't say anything at all about litigation and only commented on how the firing range needs to ensure bullets stop inside their land. If you wanna give me grief for my comments, at least bitch about the things I actually said.
So someone shoots high and hits a kid at the school, congratulations your pedantry has resulted in a child being hit.
Look, if you can't keep the bullets inside your land, you either should have built bigger safety measures or you should have bought more land downrange so anything that goes over still lands on your property. You as the business owner and land owner are allowing people to fire weapons too powerful for the size of and safety measures on your land. Anything else renders land you don't own completely unusable to its rightful owners for reasonable fear of death.
In this case, since the school is already there and they obviously can't buy the land anymore, if they can't fix it with safety measures, they shouldn't be allowing any guns that can reach that far. Sucks for them as a business owner, but sometimes, such is the cost of not being proactive about the problems you and your business are causing. That's them facing consequences for inadequate safety measures, not because of what particular type of building got built beyond the border. I don't give a shit if it's Peter Thiel's new house, you have no legal or moral right to endanger people on land you don't control so you can profit off your business.
Having a business model that involves stray bullets regularly leaving the premises is an interesting thing to defend.

Long distanced outdoor shooting ranges aren't uncommon or unheard of. Whoever put the school here is a moron.
Nah, this is a problem for the range to solve. If the bullets can travel for miles, they need to own miles of land. Or build facing a hill.
No, they need to stop the rounds within their boundary. Who else is in danger because of this, it won't be just the school.

It hasn't been an issue before this, it wouldn't have been an issue if they hadn't put a school downrange.
So they've been doing dodgy shit since then, that's not a defence. They need to stop discharging fucking projectiles from their property.
This isn't a noise problem, where "I was here first" is a legitimate defence. The range needs to cease operating until they can find a solution.
Lol just because this the first you've heard of it doesn't mean it didn't exist as a problem prior. Bullets leaving the range is a massive issue whether there's a school or an empty field.
