works for me.. i don't regularly visit reddit though so maybe if you hit multiple pages a month it blocks you or something?
It won't let you view anything with a VPN while not logged in so I'm just not using it anymore

They are likely A/B testing this in different regions or user agents or something. Expect it to be the new normal.

If anyone still wants to read reddit without needing to post or vote, just use one of the frontends (similar to xcancel/nitter for x/twitter), they still work and you don't have to give any traffic to reddit itself. I have a redirect extension to make any reddit link go to a frontend, for example the link above automatically takes me to https://redlib.catsarch.com/r/neoliberal/comments/1vbraiy/houses_are_for_living_not_for_speculation_is/ That way you can still see what's on the original reddit link with most of the benefits of an old.reddit link without actually having to, you know, actually visit that cesspit.
