news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Abolishing the ICC guarantees WW3. It is a lynchpin of possible rule-enforcement avenues that prevents total international conflict. By providing the individualisation of guilt its existence functions to prevent civilisational guilt and civilisational revenge enacted based on a lack of codified enforcement options.
It is far from perfect but its existence is incredibly important to prevent party hour.
only if it has legitimacy and imprisoning netanyahu would be a good start towards gaining that legitimacy.
not really. It's just some random international body that doesn't do much.
It is one of the only non-military enforcement tools that exists to prevent wiping out civilisations. It offloads acts committed by one civilisation on another onto the leadership who take the blame for the actions, preventing one civilisation from demanding accountability of the entirety of another civilisation.
You remove this function from the global framework and you go back to Nation A saying Nation B is evil and its people must be completely and totally wiped out. Which of course Israel is already doing but there is an ICC warrant out for his arrest and that can be enforced if he does go anywhere that's signed to the ICC.
It also prevents collective responsibility, which is what occurred post-ww1, when the War Guilt Clause was made against Germany. A major component of ww2 occurring.
This is not to say that these things do not occur outside the framework of the ICC but its existence does have an impact on those signed to it compared to the world prior to many of the frameworks that were built post-ww2 specifically to try and mitigate what was happening before. A break down of international frameworks will lead us back to that world.
Well the main problem is that it's a liberal institution that is very heavy on De Jure, but very light De Facto.
Neoliberal order is all about ideas and guarding capital. It's perfectly okay with certain types of mass murder (Like Sanctions) instead of enforcing mutual-cooperation across the board. I'm not saying it has absolutely 0 merit, but we need to get off our high horse and realize there's no such thing as Enlightened Despots who have a moment of conscience and decided to establish some tools of justice, that's bullshit. It was a moment of crisis and they had to budge to stabilize, a concession, which is as easily taken away as it is given.
For the world to change material relationships have to change.
This was exactly what the ICC was for. It was jokingly referred to as the International Colonial Court. It prosecuted its first white person about 5 years ago. It was used to enforce liberalism based "justice".
You might be confusing the ICJ with the ICC
They did issue an arrest warning against Netanyahu and Galant.
ICC is an US bludgeon against designated enemies, if you look at the list of people they accused you will see mostly Africans and Russians, but no US or West European perpetrators of the numerous crimes against humanity they commit. It's also a meaningless kangaroo court that don't have any real legitimacy or support. It only gained some fame after it accused Putin and now with the Netanyahu.
US acting against it is just reflexive turbozionism and typical Trump tantrum, similar to the one that ended USAID, despite both being US tools for dominating the global south.
