can dogs eat cheese? is it bad for them?
Cheese is fine (in moderation). Grapes, onions, garlic, and chocolate are not. There may be others. Your vet should be able to confirm good and bad foods. Don’t use AI for this kind of advice.
Xylitol, an artificial sugar commonly found in gum, is super poisonous to dogs.

Isn't the chocolate thing often exaggerated though? Like if a 50lb dog eats a full snickers bar, most vets would tell you not to worry about it.
Like don't feed them chocolate, or leave a bucket of candy out where they can have it, but if you walk to the bathroom on movie night and he snatched half your chocolate bar off the coffee table; he's not going to die.
Grapes on the other hand... Apparently they're fucking dangerous
It's bad for their kidneys, it's not like they are going to keel over and die right away, but it's going to hurt then long term and shorten their life span.

My vet told me some dogs ate sensitive to grapes and some dogs can have as much as they want without harm and you only find out which way it is for your dog by watching them die of kidney failure
Well yeah but understanding risks is valuable. My point was more that if a dog knocks his head on the table make sure he's not bleeding and keep an eye on him for a bit, you probably don't need to take him to the vet. I indeed would not advise anyone to hit their dog in the head with a table.
I imagine, the problem comes in from there being wildly different sizes of both, dogs and chocolate.
I once heard a story, where a small dog had eaten chocolate, so the owner called the vet. And at first, the vet told them that it's probably fine, but wanted to know how much chocolate the dog ate.
And when they then told the vet, that the dog had eaten a full-size chocolate bar, suddenly it was treated like an emergency. As in, they had to bring the dog to the vet immediately, got treated before everyone else still waiting, and the dog was given a drug to make it puke out all the chocolate.
American "chocolate" is not real chocolate. But it's still bad for dogs.
Caffeine is toxic to most animals. Milk chocolate has so little actual chocolate in it that there's virtually no caffeine, so that's why your vet tells you not to worry about the snickers bar. If you eat dark chocolate because you're not a troglodyte then you might have more to worry about
How is a snickers bar the example of chocolate you chose? It's like what, 10% chocolate at most? And milk chocolate at that.
No matter, it's not exaggerated because it's never been "if your dog has anything with cocoa in it it'll die immediately!!". Chocolate isn't good for them so just don't ever give it to them or leave some in a place they can get to.
I think a snickers is a great example and you're foolish for questioning it

AI is a "trust but verify" tool. Sometimes it's really wrong, usually it's right. Never take what it says at face value (which, as you pointed out, is the same way to treat a stranger on the internet)
I asked mine and they're telling me they're totally alright eating cheese, pepperoni, bacon, chicken, french fries, potato chips, pretzels, cookies, ice-cream, rice, peppers, beef, graham crackers, other crackers... oh, they've just changed their answer to "all of the food."
Yeah they can have cheese in moderation, but like most mammals after adulthood, they have a good chance of being lactose intolerant.
Yes, but dogs can eat a lot of things they shouldn't. They have no restraint. That's where you come in.
Yes, it is bad for them, especially little dogs. No, it won't kill them, but it's not good. Most advice online says cheese is fine but not high fat cheese... If you're buying low fat cheese for your dog, you can afford a proper dog treat.
