Imo it's mostly down to material conditions. Star Trek's heyday was pre-2000. Trek fans are nerd types, many nerd types at the time got high-paying jobs in the tech or engineering sectors. People who are "doing well" generally tend to have petite-bourgeois politics due to a variety of things, but in particular investments and home ownership. See the modern "tech bro" who is usually some type of libertarian.
Further, those sectors often have ties to weapons manufacturers and the like. The people who design missiles at Raytheon are going to be imperialist dogs and a good number of them are going to be trekkies.
