Two reasons.

A. Kids don't have a future here. The STEM craze all but died out and jobs are disappearing. Some see it as the only path to a career.

or

B. The kid in question is a fascist and wants to die for the 4th Reich due to propaganda.

Awkward times in the bunks, I'd say.

they specifically target poor and middle class neighborhoods to that end. they even know that some college campuses(the prospects of them finding a job is low) so they often are seen on campus trying to recruit people. STEM job prospects have been so bad for like 10+ years too, if your not going for programming/TECH, bio(health only), and maybe an engineer, dont expect something, if you dont have years of lab experience. they also never target wealthier neighborhoods.

i seen recruiting offices for each branch in different locations. army for a well travelled mall area, and another in less taffic mall, conveniently both are located near public colleges. the only oddball one i saw was a recruiting office near a mall of asian supermarket near the highway.

and then the ones for all the armed forced combined into one in a more obscure area in a financial district.

"I don't have the money so I'm going to help murder innocent schoolchildren in a country we want to loot" is a shitty excuse.
Some guy robbing a house and shooting the inhabitants is exactly the same, only not legalized by the fascist regime.

It's more that their options are severely limited, and the military offers a paying job that could lead to a career, or at least pay for college, which could lead to a career. Getting the Hell out of bad living situation, either a terrible home town, or a rough family situation, is another good reason. Foster kids age out of the system at 18, and often go homeless. The military looks like a positive viable option from that perspective.

There are a LOT of reasons that people join the military, and VERY few join the military to kill.

VERY few join the military to kill.

Repeating the same mental gymnastics, as if these scumbags don't know what that terrorist army does constantly.
Those frequently heard apologetics are disgusting. They are vulgar hired murderers in a uniform.

I'm sure lots of Mongols were perfectly decent people who weren't afforded the right opportunities, too.

[–] Alkali@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm a bit confused, so we hate Mongols now? I mean, I'm down I guess. It's just hard to keep up.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

If you would do me the kindness of treating my point in the context it was made, that would be very welcome. The point, though perhaps mystifyingly put, was that the motivations and economic forces acting upon the invader are of little import to the objects of their predation.

[–] Alkali@lemmy.ml -5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What country are you in that is so perfect, and what have you done to keep it that way?

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Now you want to try a little whataboutism?
What fucked up country has been 'at war' (plundering and mass-murdering) for all its existence and has their vile inhabitants cry over the murderers not the victims
Or worse, complain about what it does to their gas prices.
They give these cunts a discount and thank them for their service.
You're all very sick people.
You should be hiding under a rock in shame if you had some decency or humanity.
But no, blatantly trying to rationalize and whitewash this filth.

[–] Alkali@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

England?

But my point is not whataboutism, its about you judging the decisions of others without providing viable alternative options. Which some people consider a dick move.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It's your shithole and your impotent, apathetic people that allowed this situation to be created and are responsable.
You provide viable alternative options.
As if not anything is better than going to mass murder poor innocent people.
Is there literally anything worse?
And then have the nerve and arrogance to call people criticizing the murderers and their whitewashers dicks.
You're fucking barbarians and selfish scum, content with the worst war crimes, genocide and terror as long as it benefits you.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

A. Man I hear what you're saying but what a stupid decision. I see vets on the street literally every day.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Last time I heard, enlistment is extremely unpopular among youths.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

apparently not with top gun maverick propaganda, when the movie came out, more people wanted to join because of it. in general people cant get in because thier education is so dumb down they cant even pass the asvab(enlistment only), and apparently they also cant pass the weight limit/physical portion too. i suspect alot of the enlistment comes from red areas, destitute white people with little prospect of a future, joinj the military as away to escape poverty/ or to stroke thier racist egos.

and yes economic downturn will drive more people to joining too, like the 08 crisis, and drumpfs manufactered distractions from the EPSTEIN FILES.
