MacOS is a bit like a mid Linux distro if you ignore/disable the bulk of the Apple crap. And on the hardware side it's some of best laptops.

You can use stuff like homebrew or nix if IT allows it.

And from what I've seen, IT policy is often more permissive with macos than windows

I see mfs using snapchat and texting on their work-provided macs. Zero clue that it's all visible for IT to look at.
