Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesnโ€™t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

"Do you think my tattoo is cool?" No, I don't. There are no cool tattoos. "Check out my sleeve!" Oh god ew.

Tattoos themselves are stupid. Doubly so if it's some media IP. "I put Batman on my body!" "Look at this image of Goku on my calf!" I can't think of many things I'd want to do less than that.

There are a few narrow exceptions. Chances are yours isn't one of them.

If you personally like tattoos, fine. I'm not saying nobody should get tattoos because I don't like them. I'm stating my opinion that tattoos are stupid, and I am stating it here because it is probably not a popular opinion.

That shit is super fucking cringey. You're literally dedicating your body to be a walking advertisement.. As someone with multiple tattoos, I side eye these so hard. Obviously you're allowed to get whatever tf you want wherever you want, but choosing any IP speaks to your immaturity and lack of personality. Just weird parasocial hail cooperate nonsense.

Oh god and the people who get celebrity faces?! ๐Ÿคฎ

The person I know with a bat tat got it because he felt the comics were an important part of his life, got him through tough times

Your judgement isn't always right

This I have never understood. Why get a tattoo as some kind of reward or reminder of going through though times? My brother did so as well. I sorta get but then also I don't get it.

As someone with 0 tattoos but who wants tattoos, I think the bar for those kinds of tats is if the moments you're signifying through the tattoo have truly defined or been a significant part of your life. I think even though we all change, it's fine to acknowledge what's happened in our past in an artistic manner on our bodies. For instance, I learned English playing Zelda & other video games, I've played them for decades, so I would consider a tattoo of Nintendo IP, even though I want nothing more than for the entire company to spontaneously combust. My love for the Zelda IP is bigger than my hate for Nintendo, and I have no qualms holding both feelings at once. Such hatred, at least for me, stems from them butchering our childhood memories, after all.

The style of the tattoo might be harder to nail for me, because sure I might want a Legend of Zelda tattoo or something, but I could make something classy and timeless or I could make the worst recreation of AI marketing hallucination content imaginable and regret the ink as it gets injected into me. If I have no taste, I could very quickly regret my tattoo.... And that's why I still have no tats. I've seen how I make bases & houses in video games, I don't trust my artistic choices.

Well, I just cancelled my triforce tattoo appointment ๐Ÿ˜ญ

That would be so cool... if you ever find a portal to Hyrule.

Ocarina of Time was the first game I completed as a kid. Have a lot of memories of talking through puzzles with my Dad who told me about the Zelda on NES. I've played basically all Zelda game since then.

But I do get it and it's your body so your choice alone. Don't let an internet person to talk you in or out of anything. Telling people who don't like your tattoos to fuck off is a normal part of having them. If it makes you happy that's all that matters.

Having said all that, I do stand by my comment. I think that is a cringey immature idea. Even on a more practical level, you don't know what Nintendo will do in the future, do you really want to see a brand advertising logo on your body if they do something to piss you off? Lawsuits against those who use emulators and starting a patent war with Palworld? Idk...

I do have a friend who met a politician who agreed with his core beliefs back in the day. They went on a bender and ended up getting matching tattoos. Fast forward to today, and the politician did a 180, as many of them do, and went into the deep end. I joked with my friend about his tattoo, and his response was "I am getting it laser removed, and if that doesn't work, I'll take it off with a cheese grater".

So, I really do get what you mean.

Hey you know what would be kind of sick actually? To get the time portal from Skyward Sword.

I mean I wouldn't get it personally, because I could never commit to permanent marks on my body. I can barely commit to hanging a painting on my walls because I know those holes will stay there if I want to take the painting down.

Still though, you should do it. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Shit, appointment back on!

I had a coworker-friend that got a bunch of tattoos in quick succession

First they got the rebel and imperial logo tattoos on each forearm and then a short while later got the kingdom hearts key and something else ip themed (I can't remember the details from a decade ago). I joked they'd have to start paying Disney royalties at that point

lol I have three media IP tattoos: LittleBigPlanet, Halo Reach, and Outer Wilds. Don't really like Microsoft or Bungie at this point, but when I look at my Halo Reach one, I think of the game where I met one of my greatest friends, which then allowed me to meet all the other great people I've met so far. People I talk to everyday. Game changed my life, and I don't even like Halo Reach that much. It's different for everybody. I saw someone with a monster energy tattoo and thought the same thing you do, like why tf would you get an energy drink branded on you. But of course, everyone values different things and something insignificant to me could be life-changing for them.
