I think the severity of this issue will be determined by its frequency, but the comparison to the red ring of death is just another piece of poor publicity this thing has been receiving since its price and performance reveals.

Lot of people are making quite a big deal out of one machine failing due to shipping damage or a bad gpu, wonder who's paying to have these pushed out?

Nobody, would be my guess. It's just that gaming outlets love divisive topics that get them clicks. Valve is too small of a player in the hardware business for console manufacturers to really care about the Steam Machine.
