I think I'll be able to empathize with extraterrestrial alien religious rituals first before I can empathize with people who modify carefully crafted ergonomics of their phones with cases and stupid shit like this.

"Oh, my phone needs that ugly as round thingy and a transparent case that turns yellow within a month because I tend to drop it"

How... How about NOT DROPPING IT??? The beautifully crafted materials of your phone, that beautiful glass, the thinness... all of that is gone because you decided to slap a cheap ass case on it...

carefully crafted ergonomics

..it's a rectangle.

Reminds me of cylinder stuck in m&ms tube story, no other relation

You're carrying a very expensive device full of highly sensitive data that for many people is their primary computer that contains their digital life.

It is made out of easily damaged materials like glass and aluminium that don't offer much grip because they are smooth, and the shape doesn't offer much grip because it is so thin.

And you think: "Should I put a cheap protective case on this in case I drop it or it gets damaged? Should I take the most basic precaution to look after this expensive and fragile thing that I carry with me wherever I go?"

"No - that would spoil the way it looks."

A phone is quite likely one of the most touched and seen item by the user in their day. For something like that, tactile sensation, ergonomics and looks kinda do matter, no?

I can't be the only one who receives genuine pleasure from handling a clean, smooth glass brick every day, right?

And yes, phones are expensive and important. That's why we just... Use them carefully and not drop them.

If I purchased an expensive car, I'd use it carefully. I wouldn't cover it up with plastic protection mats or whatever you protect it in case I crash.

And again, about dropping the phone... Just... Don't drop it? How does a drop even happen? Is it really that hard not to drop a phone?

Funny thing but those cases are also often designed to be held in your hand ergonomically, almost like they expected people to hold them just like phones. And while some use transparent plastics that have an aging colour, my current one is just black. I don't drop my phone often but it occasionally happens. Haven't had a single phone break on me so far (knock on wood) but I think the case is to thank in at least a few of those cases (heh).

Plus my case allows me to use a magnetic mount in my car without needing to use the adhesive side and make it actually stick to my phone. It just sits under the case on the back (or if the magnet couldn't handle going through the case, I could adhere it to the case instead of the expensive phone).

You should probably get a case, after posts so full of hubris like these, you're probably going to end up dropping your phone soon.

Your logic is basically 'I prefer it this way, so it must be the best way and everyone should conform'. You don't drop your phone, so you can't fathom that others might.

You are gooning over a rectangle

I've gone caseless for my last two phones, and I drop my phone occasionally. It's fine, it's built pretty well.

[–] Beehaw_Girl@beehaw.org 2 points 1 day ago

WHAT?? These flat slippery rectangles ARE NOT ergonomic at all until user inserts it into an ergonomic case of their choosing.

this is top tier satire

If someone constantly drops their expensive ass phone, they're still too young and need a cheap training phone.

Accidents and fumbles happen to anyone. We're not perfect machines.
