Compared to the West, China is doing much better on human rights right now. That aside, if you don't know Chinese culture or Chinese language, you certainly can't be considered an "expert on Chinese human rights".

The reason I mentioned Fox News earlier is because the New Atheist movement just regurgitates crusader age propaganda to demonize Muslims, which is the classical equivalent of getting facts from Fox News. People who can't even independently verify facts can certainly not be called experts in any field. Their only way of knowledge is repeating second hand information from others which would then be the actual experts (if they spoke the truth)
