“Tipflation” is the worst part. It’s annoying as hell when staff tell you the terminal or kiosk is going to “ask you a question” and the fucking thing asks for a tip while they’re staring right at you. It’s gaslighting people into questioning whether to tip for something that typically wouldn’t require a tip, and whether you should tip to avoid having your food spat on, etc. Then the suggested tip percentages are often inflated and if you want to tip lower, you have to fumble around with the “other” button while they continue to stare. I’d say vote with your wallet, but every place does this now.

The other night the bar I was at had a minimum tip selection of 25%. My friend expressed admiration for the fact that every time I got out my phone calculator to manually enter 20%.

I live in America, I understand that 20% is expected, but I was raised on 10-15-20% for bad-good-excellent service. The fact that the percentage expected keeps going up is a hill I'll die on. I'm not tipping 30 fucking percent. And it's even more egregious that I've seen this crap happen in cities where tipped workers make a fair minimum wage. Yeah some places tipped workers are making $2 something an hour, but where they're making $20/hr I'm not going to feel guilted into giving 25%.

Bah abolish tipping completely. Not just for food workers but all workers. Charge me what it fucking costs.

I drop a paper dollar in the tip jar, and stare right back as I choose “no tip” on the screen.
