There are always options.
Plug a laptop into your TV via HDMI and buy a cheap Bluetooth keyboard. Install ublock origin. Sail on over to a certain community on Db0 for some advice on free streaming services.
For most people, that's work, not an "option" per se. Also, most people run win11 and we can all agree that's a horrendous option on a tv
And most people are fine with giving their data to Google, Samsung, etc. and that's fine if it works for them, but for the people who don't mind a little more work, the options are there.
Most people are not dealing with that. Making a laptop work as well as a dedicated remote first device is a pain in the ass for most people. People want panel and remote based ui's first.
I never said most people would do it. I said there are other options and described one. If people want to be lazy, that's on them.
It takes such a minimal amount of effort nowadays to set up a barebones pi or laptop with Linux , hook to TV and just watch in web browser or use a graphical frontend like kodi. Theres millions of sources for doing all of this.
Oh well , my coworkers can complain to me about $250 monthly cable bills. I'll just smile.
I know what you're saying but there's dozens of people at just my company making $100k plus and they need to go to the phone store to set up a new email address. Like these people don't know how to make a pivot table in excel and they have no interest in learning it.
Most humans just don't have much intellectual curiosity they just want to get paid and spend money.
There's always Vero (https://osmc.tv/vero/). Basically customized Kodi (OSMC) already installed on hardware for them; they can just unbox and hook up to the T. V.
That's pretty cool actually, that looks like it would work for most people, idk ppl just buy what they see in ads for the most part unfortunately
This is exactly what I do almost to a T, but I use an Atari VCS (not the original 🙃) and a Logitech wireless KB. Or my phone through KDE connect.
It works just fine, SO likes it. If people would try, but theyre lazier than they have ever been, and dumb. It really was not that long ago that an HTPC was somewhat common.
People only know what big tech feeds them.
We can blame the lazier and dumber part on Fox and the Murdochs as well. It's a whole ecosystem of misinformation, dependency, and evil.

Until roku starts shitting the bed it is the least worst choice for those that want ready to go streaming sticks or TVs. I will continue using my roku sticks until they force ads. I already turned off all the home ads and suggestions except the one for roklue or whatever I couldn't find a setting for.
haven't had mine connected for a few months but my dietpi with the free adguard home (like pihole) was working great to block the ads on the ui and in a lot of the programming in the 'free' apps.
I have Roku because they haven't died yet but AppleTV is a better choice. It's a Roku without the ads.
Does apple tv have a streaming stick?
I couldn't find one and couldn't tell if the box had some easy way to mount it to the wall behind the tv.
No stick.
But there's a wide range of Apple TV unit mounts for your wall or TV.
I'll consider spending nearly $200 each to replace each of my $40 roku sticks when they actually implement ads I can't turn off.
