When you're in a left wing space, especially one like Hexbear, people are likely to be using the term "liberal" in a more technical, polisci sense than you are used to. Think of it as political jargon. Liberalism in this sense is basically just a combination of representative democracy and capitalism. This makes both the Democrats and the Republicans liberal political parties. Given that liberalism, as a school of political thought, goes back to the enlightenment, it should not be terribly surprising that many liberals hold conservative views.
TL;dr: OP is not just talking about the democrats. They are talking about followers of any bourgeois political party in the USA, including both democrats and republicans:)
Edit: this is why, for example, the National Liberal Party (of Australia) is their right wing, conservative political party.
