Sorry for another reddit-based post, but today reddit held a poll: Do you want the United States to become socialist? Most Americans voted No, and most non-Americans voted Yes.

When the average American hears the word socialism, literally all they associate with the word is "gommulism no food". That's it. I'm not exaggerating. You might as well ask your dog if it wants socialism, it's probably similarly educated on the matter.
