#36: Star Trek: The Original Series, season 2, episode 11 "Friday's Child"

Written by D.C. Fontana, directed by Joseph Pevney.

Stardates 3497.2 through 3499.1 (December 2267)

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." - Commander Scott

The Enterprise is sent to Capella IV to negotiate mining rights for a rare and essential mineral. They arrive under a warning that Klingons have been seen operating in the sector. Captain Kirk leaves Commander Scott in command, and beams down to the surface with an away team. Just as they offer their greetings to the very particular and ceremonial Capellan people, a Klingon steps forward revealing that they had arrived first and want to secure mining rights on Capella IV in Starfleet's place.

There's something to be said about the first handful of Klingon episodes showing the warrior race, after losing the four-year war, repeatedly trying to economically undermine the UFP. Probably why these Klingons (with the exception of Kor) were pretty wimpy. The Klingon Empire sent their weakest warriors to do the dishonorable work.

Also, I don't know what the title Friday's Child has to do with anything.

Interesting comments. I guess I hadn't really thought of the Klingons operating that way.

As for me, I didn't think this ep was outright terrible, but it certainly is one of the less-memorable ones outside of maybe McCoy and the pregnant gal's interactions. Also, the Klingon being slayed by primitive weapons.

From Memory-Alpha:

The name of this episode derives from the 1887 Harper's Weekly version of the old children's rhyme, Monday's Child, which includes the line "Friday's child is full of woe."
